    Hello,

I've settled on my next car being a Galaxy/Alahmbra/Sharan MPV 2004-2007.

    I've heard some people saying don't go for a 90bph - go for a 130/150bhp.

However most of the ones that are currently available are 90bph.

What difference does this make ?

And any other tips for purchasing this model.

    Cheers

It's the power output, in a car that size 90bhp wont be enough if you have passengers on board.

90 bhp is quite low for a car that size....especially if you're loaded with people and baggage, and trying to get up to speed on a motorway!

The engine capacity (litre) is going to be higher in the 130/150bhp than the 90, so you'll be paying more tax and slightly more on fuel. But that's also down to how you drive it..and being underpowered is a bit crap, to be honest :)

A little Toyota Corolla hatchback has about 70/80bhp and is much smaller and lighter than the cars you've mentioned, and my Ford Focus 1.6 had 115bhp. Again, that'd most likely be a bit lighter than an MPV.

Around 130bhp sounds like a good bet for you, seeing as MPV's are usually intended for carrying families, dogs and the like!

By the way, all these bhp figures relate to a brand new car, so it's quite normal for the power to drop slightly, depending on condition and mileage!

in the case of the galaxy/ sharan the 90/ 130/ 150bhp options are probably all available from the same 1.9 tdi engine so tax won't be different between the three options.

Seems like a big jump from 90-160bhp out of the same engine...

OP are we talking about the old Sharan or one of these?

the VW sourced 1.9tdi is certainly available in subtle variations with outputs of 90/105/115/130 and 150 bhp in different applications.

90bhp on the Sharan finished in 2002, 113/115 would have been the lowest bhp after that AFAIK.

The 130bhp is the best alrounder in that car imo, good balance of power and torque. 90bhp struggles especially if you have people and baggage in it. And I've read in the past that the 150bhp version had known issues.

BTW there each variant of that engine has different modifications not just with software. More powerful versions have different injectors, larger turbo, etc.

Cheers lads, very helpful replies, I'll definitely hang on for a few more weeks then and suffer the cattlebox that is the morning Luas for a while longer, I will have it fully loaded every so often and would rather to be able to change lanes before the sun goes down.

Might check in with you again Bazz about the variety in modifications when I'm set on one. Have test driven a 90bhp since and it was definitely more sluggish than the transit I'm laying to rest, which, not knowing f all about engines etc., was suprising - so will defo hold out for a 130bhp for a while longer.

    Cheers
