Bootlegs

Has anyone any experience in buying bootleg vinyls. I'm sure the quality varies from release to release, but I'm just wondering what the general consensus is with them. I'm after Moodymann's 'Soul Sounds EP'. A near-mint version of the original will cost me at least €60, while the bootleg is about €25. The bootleg is only a couple of years old, while the original is from 1996. Would the original still sound better? Or has technology improved since then in terms of how records are pressed or the type of vinyl used? Any advice would go a long way. Cheers.

Don't buy it. Save your money for an original. Some sound better than others but they won't be as good as on original. I've bought some of those Moodymann bootlegs (new for €10) and I ended up selling them again. I certainly wouldn't be spending €25 on one.

Cheers. Yeah €25 is an awful lot for a bootleg. I just needed someone to tell me I'm not crazy spending €60 on a record. I'm sure it'll be worth it though. Damn those Detroit guys! They're so bloody cool and expensive.

I just checked there and I have that bootleg you're looking at. To be fair, it's not the worst sounding one (I ended up keeping this one). Fine for listening at home anyway. I only paid €10 for it though. Decks.de used to have them in stock every now and then so might be worth a look.

Cheers. I'll keep an eye on it. I'll probably just pick up the original anyway. It's gonna cost my €35 including postage. If I go that far I may as well go a little further. But if I ever see any for a tenner I'll pick them up. Worth a shot. Thanks for your advice. It's been hugely helpful.

Are we talking bootleg bootlegs here? Or dubiously authorised represses?
I got one or two of those Decks exclusive repress things and I can't see or hear any issue with the quality. On the other hand, years ago I bought a white label in Liverpool that had a tune I had been looking for for ages on one side, and another well known (but unrelated) tune of the time on the other side. It sounded like it had been repressed from a cassette tape.

OP, if I was considering paying €25 for a record, I'd probably stay in for a weekend and spend the €60 on the real thing.

I'm a down and out student living on the worst type of beans and the stalest of bread. So an extra €35 is more than one weekend for me! Not to worry, my slightly-richer girlfriend will pick it up on her credit card and I can pay her back in fives and tens. Girls are great.

Regarding your original question. I think this is a proper dodgy bootleg. I've just been on Discogs and checked out the 'record label' that it was released on. It seems they have a really dodgy release of 'January/Midnights'. It was compared to a 128kbps YouTube rip! That says it all really.
