    Hi Guys

As you've probably seen, there's a pretty active thread here about a Grey Market

My question is, how many of you would buy from a grey market.
Considering the huge cost savings, or would you consider the fact that you aren't given a warranty from the manufacturer a reason not to buy there.

I firmly believe that you only get what you pay for and you only get cheep thing cheep.

Even when other people say that they have taken the chance and bought goods from " a grey market" I still can't bring myself to follow suit.

If it works 99% of the time, I am the other 1%:)

You do get a manafactures warranty. It's worldwide. Somebody in the forum gave false information and tried to drive it home. The product you buy is covered, you just have to return it to the country of purchase if you buy outside of the EU (if the product is NOT intended to be sold in the EU).

Perhaps you misunderstand Grey market? Its where you Buy the EXACT same item from another country, usually usually china or Hong Kong, for a lot less money then its sold in your own domestic market.

Every single piece of gear I have has been bought from outside the country. Supporting local economy comes second to supporting my own pocket. When they can compete, then they'll be considered.

Sorry Wabbit Ears, I was thinking about the Asian online sites, I would be concerned if the products are counterfeit.

I always buy a piece of gear when I visit New York, at B&H.

you're obviously in a luxurious position where your job doesn't face the danger of being outsourced.

Thanks for voting. Out of interest why would you not use a grey market?

because if i'm going to get use and enjoyment out of the equipment (and the hobby), i'd prefer deal with a proper retail environment where i can get support and even loan equipment - for example, the camera exchange once lent me a (secondhand) bronica ETRS for a week to use to allow me to decide whether i wanted to buy it.

i'm not poor (nor rich!) but i do also believe in supporting the local economy too - better to see the money (at least the profit margin) i spend being spent again in ireland rather than being shunted abroad. the argument has been raised above about going for the cheapest option always; that's a short term gain, but i do work in an industry where i see large swathes of jobs being sent abroad, so i'm conscious of not assisting with that process.

Anybody who's listing the purchase as a tax write off is better served by buying locally and keeping things simplified.

Even if you can get it cheaper after you take tax refunds into account which is often the case?

This goes for many things.! For example People get bike frames shipped from china and A girl I know got a bike shipped from Poland (not grey market per sey) as, even with the cycle to work scheme, she saved hundreds on the same bike she had looked at here.

Ireland is the greyist of grey markets, so yes.

I didn't mean that they wouldn't have to pay tax (though that does help) I was referring to equipment being purchased as a business expense and the cost of the equipment being deducted from their tax bill over the course of a few years.
