    Hi there,

My wife is on DA for mental illness and I'm considering just taking her abroad for a month, possibly longer, just to give her and us a much needed break. I'm just wondering what are the implications of me doing so? I know when you are on Jobseekers you have to fill in a holiday form, but as neither of us are signing on, do we have to say anything to anyone? Her money is paid direct to the bank so that's ok. We're not moving abroad, just possibly taking an extended break there as part of my wife's recovery. I'm out of ideas for other things to do to help her at this stage. We've had a very tough year and I think a change of scenery will do her the world of good.

Thanks a lot for any advice.

had this situation with a friend and she got caught. i think the limit was two weeks out of the country. the habitual residence clause is very strict

could you for your peace of mind phone citizens info; a general inquiry and also her doctor. there are provisions for getting treatment abroad

I dont think it should be a problem as you are only going on holidays albeit for a month. Habitual residence doesnt come into the scenario as you are habitually resident in Ireland. Give DA in Longford a buzz.

we were told two weeks was all we were allowed to be out of the country so will be interested in the update on this.

rules re hr have tightened up

That's fierce scabby if they only give two weeks tbh. I mean Disability is completely different from Jobseekers so.... Be interested in the information on this

Rules are still the same 2 weeks is all you are allowed. Hr has nothing to do with holidays you take the rest at your own expence.

op if you are looking after your oh then you should be on the carers allowance, meet up with the social worker at the hospital or clinic that she attends this will make life a little easier for you both, financially as well.

speak to your doctor or consultant; this surely is not the first time this has come up.
they may be able to advise etc.

but then budget without the da. my friend lost it through being away too long most had to repay. she had had serious illness preventing her from returning but even so

and wisdom to take out good travel insurance etc.

Thanks for all the replies. My wife is actually back in hospital again so I'll wait until she is (hopefully) back on her feet. I am looking after her full-time and have recently applied for carers allowance, which takes up to 12 weeks to come through, so that'll definitely help out financially as we are effed in that regards. I'd be hoping to get the respite grant and take her on a holiday somewhere totally different just for a change of scenery. We'll see how it goes and i'll give an update if I get an answer to this from the social welfare department

ireland is very varied...good luck with it all and please look after yourself too. a very stressful situation for you.

at the back of my mind there is something re organisations that help with these things. maybe vincent de paul would know...you need a safe environment.
