Hey guys, thought I'd see if anyone has done this before.

I've been after a PVM/BVM for bloody ages now and found a seller with 6 X 20 inch PVM monitors listed for £50 a pop! :)

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251511424455

Does anyone know what would happen if I tried to get one of these delivered via parcel motel?

I've had (accidental) over sized packages before, but nothing this big. Reckon they'd still allow it?

I don't see why not. At worst you'll have to collect it from the depo instead of from the Parcel Motel.

    Ah, here we go;

    Over 35KG

In addition to the €7.00 Parcel Motel charge, there is a supplement of €7.00 per 10kgs (over the 35kgs) or part thereof per parcel.

I think these monitors come in about 55kg, so it's still not too bad.

Didn't someone get an engine delivered to parcel motel? Think someone here mentioned it ages ago.

No way! A CRT should be a breeze then. Maybe I should buy all six... no, we all remember what happened the last time I bought a wall of monitors

I got a 42" Plasma TV delivered via parcel motel, I collected it from the depot. "Dimensional Weight" can be a bit of a killer (think I had to pay €15) but actual weight is probably more pertinent for that PVM.

Would that not be the depot in Antrim though (if ordering from the UK)? Or will they drive it down to Dublin for you?

Nah, the depot in Antrim is just a delivery address. Nightline have an oversized pick up area in Finglas :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭Steve X2

I think they might have an option to even courier the larger heavier items to your door. Not sure how much though.

They do alright, any oversized package I've had was delivered straight to the door. I think it was €10.50 on top of the €3.50 standard charge.

    Go on do it!

I got a huge record player delivered off them. It wouldnt fit into any motel so I had to pay an extra tener and the couriered it down to me so still worked out pretty cheap

I looked into this to get a pair of 20kg dumbbells delivered from the UK. it was coming out at at least 30 quid for me.

Defo watch the dimensional weight. If you could get the package dimensions you would be able to make a better estimate.

Good news O1s1n, I have a 20inch PVM I'd sell yea for 60euro if you pick it up in North Co.Dublin :)
Bad news, it has a crack in the plastic in the front. Never got around to disassembling it to do a repair. The monitor works perfect other than that cracked plastic.
I got it from the lad who I think now goes as 'STG.Otaku' but I never really used it. for another tenner I'd throw in the SCART to RGB BNC cable.

Will definitely take that from you man! RGB to BNC cable too!

Is teh crack in just the monitor housing or does it go across the screen at all?

Do you know what model of PVM it is?

Just the housing - I will PM you a pic and the details

Jaysus you're tempting me now Oisín!

I think my folks are toying with the idea of replacing the Trinitron CRT with a flat screen, and I reckon a PVM could replace the my tiny portable TV in the attic.

Doesnt that accept an S-video signal also?

That would be handy as the C64 is capable of an s-video signal, I actually have the proper cable for it complete with a resistor soldered inside it which is necessary, so i would be able to use the C64 with the pvm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,175 ✭✭✭Doge

BTW the weight of the monitor itself is exactly 30KG according to this leaflet:

    http://www.bpm-systems.de/pdf/pvm20m2mde.pdf

    The dimensions are listed also.

They have RGB, composite, S-video, and component inputs. So plenty to get your stuff hooked up. (I wonder how a PS2 looks on one via component?)

    Here's a video of one here. It's a the PVM20M2MDU (The ones I linked to are PVM20M2MDE - the U/E difference just mean USA/Europe)

I will most likely throw my PVM-2044QM up on the A&R Market should o1s1n not take it if anyone else might be interested.

Wouldnt the lack of widescreen be an issue for the ps2?

Im not sure if every game has a widescreen option, and i wonder which they default to?

Apparently this pvm here is capable of 16:9, not sure how true that is lol:

Actually that little can yoke probably can do it, our old 32" Black Diamond CRT was 4:3 but could be set to 16:9 with visible black bars.

Heres moar pvm porn to tempt us!

I've collected oversize packages from depot with no extra charges.
Last week I collected a pair of break disks, calipars, pads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,175 ✭✭✭Doge

I'm thinking maybe a 14"er might be more realistic for my attic, the depth of these pvm's is quite big, even the smaller ones.

This guys review of a 14" model is making me want one! Hes using the 240p test suite rom that we saw before for the Mega Drive:

Awesome man, now all you need to do is take a pic of dem scanlines!

Does anyone know off hand if there's a size in between 14" and 20" in the world of PVM's?

I wonder if i can find a 3rd size that is "justtttttt righttttt!"

There is indeed a 16 inch BVM.

I've only seen them on ebay in the states though, and they go for a few quid unfortunately (before you've even tacked on shipping)

Let me know when you get the Moto G 16GB btw so I can welcome you to the club!

When you get it install MD.emu and load up sonic one for the master system, with the brigtness cranked all the way. I think the colour looks amazing on the Moto G, much more vivid than my Trinitron.

I picked it up about two hours ago! :)

Sadly my sim card is far too big for it so can't do anything until I get a new one. Really annoying as I was looking forward to messing about with it this evening!

You can still install apps without the sim though?
Is it your first proper Smart Phone? The closest thing I had to one before it was the Nokia N95.

I tried cutting my old sim to a micro using the template that was posted, but made a balls of it and it wouldn't read it! :p

If anyone is joining 48 I can give you a kickback link so we'll both get free credit. Been meaning to put that in my sig.

I find that the trick to cutting the SIM card is to pay attention to the contact points. You'll see little tracks on the SIM card of where it has actually been used by the phone itself. So as long as you don't cut into these tracks you'll be fine.

I cut Shannon's card for the first time as I got a new phone for her there recently and thought I had messed it up (the shape was slightly wrong) but when I lined up the burned in tracks with another Micro sim card and then cut it accordingly it was fine.

Failing that you can always get one of these:

I was going to try out cutting the sim alright and the missus gave me her one to use as a template.

It turns out I'm still using a really really old sim. The gold part is actually bigger than the whole cut down version. So there's zero way of cutting it down as you'll be cutting into the data part itself.

Shannon's was like that too and I just cut it anyway.

You'll probably notice that the sim itself (due to tracks left by putting the SIM in and out of phones etc) it only using three of the four... sections so to speak.

Phone shop should be able to give you a new SIM straight away, without a charge.

Yeah or use a cutting tool to get it to the right shape.
