Mine failed once for faded numbers on the reg plate. Got new one and did visual inspection

Well then, it's pretty self explanatory. Get a new set of plates, all sorted.

Halfords and some motor factors can make regs and fit them right there on the spot.

If going to Halfords, you will need the vehicles reg cert.

Any decent motor factors will be able to sort you out cheaply. You will need the reg cert though

I purchased plates many times in different places, and was never asked for VRC.

It doesn't really make any sense to ask for it, unless it's the law and every place entitled to make number plates is licenced and required to ask for VRC.

yeah, I think that's in the UK. I never showed mine either, bought dozens of plates

Halfords is the only place I know in Ireland that looks for the cert.
Its the only motor factors I know that sells yellow number plate screws and GB stickers too..

It makes perfect sense to ask for some form of vehicle identification in fairness; otherwise cloning plates becomes a very easy exercise. I was actually quite annoyed when I went into my local motor factors to get new plates made up and they didnt ask to see my VRC; I could have been anyone looking to drive around on a car that has my cars reg number stuck on the front.

    As I said.
It makes perfect sense to make it obligatory for every motor factors doing plates to ask for VRC.

But unless it's volountary on their side, and not obligatory, it doesn't make sense.
Because there could have been 4999 motorfactors countrywide asking for VRC, and there still will be 1 not asking for it.
This 4999 will inconinance genuine buyers, while every scammers intending to clone the plates, are going to buy them at this 1 motorfactors that don't ask for VRC.

I hope you understand my point.
