    Hi
We are thinking of going to Lake Garda for the first time in July. Any suggestions on resorts or hotels to look at. Would it be a good idea to hire a car to tour around or is public transport ok.

I have been there a couple of times and have hired a car but also have used public transport on other occasions. You can travel by boat around the lake which is lovely. We have stayed in an apartment near Limone, a bungalow in a campsite in Baradalino and in a hotel in Garda. There is a lot of choice depending on what you want. I have never been there in July but imagine it would be very busy and congested in the bigger resorts.

The traffic is chronic around the lake in July, so dont hire a car for the full trip, use the ferries to get across the lake from town to town. If you want to go further afield, you can hire a car locally for a day or two and go up into the mountains to escape the heat and get frankly the most awesome views imaginable! I took a car down to Verona and Modena and across to Lake Iseo also and it was grand, just beware that the reputation of some Italian drivers is fully justified!

I stayed in Riva before and it was a lovely spot. I think it's the biggest town on the Lake so will prob be busy but it's lovely. Would second not getting a car. Lovely to hop on the ferry on a hot day and sail to the next beautiful town.

Might be a bit late now but riva right at the the top of the lake you can get a bus from verona to riva but its 2 and a half hours which is grand if you have the time Riva is quite german influcenced and there is a lot of water sports like sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. You can swim in the lake at riva however id recommed you get a pool where your staying as the lake is quite pebbly. There are two train stations on the southren end of the one at Dezensanzo and the other at Pechira (where you get a bus bus to riva every hour) however i recomend you get the bus at verona as its a big station and you can more information on the buses to riva.
