    Hi Guys,

Hoping someone out here can guide me in the right direction for the Kentucky Derby going over to it next week. Very little knowledge of flat racing over, so anyone have any fancies for it?

    Cheers

My only advice would be to read (or re-read if you've already done so before) the late Hunter S Thompson's 1970 Kentucky Derby trip report, 'Decadent & Depraved', to get yourself in the mood. Have fun! :D

The 140th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place in Churchhill Downs on Saturday May 3rd 2014 and is the 1st leg of the American triple crown, last won by Affirmed in 1978.

I have been following the main qualifying races for the Derby for the past few months and the one horse that stands out among all the contenders is California Chrome. http://www.horseracingnation.com/horse/California_Chrome . What has impressed me most about him is that in his last 3 starts he has won in almost identical fashion, positioned behind the pace, moving through to the lead by the final turn and then pulling clear of the field in impressive fashion. His latest win in the Santa Anita Derby was his strongest performance to date and catapulted him to hot favourite for the Kentucky Derby. His consistency in posting impressive victories race after race would suggest to me that is his level, rather than a flash in the pan, and therefore has a very strong chance in the Derby and is a contender to win the Triple Crown itself.

My next fancy is Vicar's in Trouble. His latest win in the Louisiana Derby was his most impressive leading from pillar to post and a win for him would see Rosie Napravnik become the first female jockey to win the Derby.

My 3rd contender is Wildcat Red. With 4 wins and 3 seconds from 7 careers starts he has posted solid performances in his qualifying races and even in defeat hasn' t been beaten much. His battling traits will be an advantage in the race and he may get his head in front this time.
