Now that the local elections are just a month away it really bemuses me that the councilors calling to my door think that the ire of the nation is the potholes being fixed and briars cut. Great to see local politicians are still relying on this old tripe. These are the so called new generation councilors. It really is a crock of septic tank inspection.

What are you thoughts on the level of local politics in Ireland ?.

I hate to be the one to break it to you but this is exactly what local politicans are supposed to do. Deal with local issues exactly like this and inform the electorate.

For me Property tax, water charges , loss of Garda services seem to be the driving issues in my locality. Potholes are for the lads on the road to fix

Property tax will be dealt locally, everything else, your councillor has no say over!!

Thats what the general elections are for.

Not forgetting the new personality changes of the candidates, now enthusiastically saluting one and all whenever you meet them on the byways.

Not until Garda services are subject to local authority governance, no. You'd be as well off bringing it up at your local GAA meetings.

Look at your local authority website for a comprehensive listing of services they have responsibility for.

to maintain the illusion of democracy while the CCs get on with the actual job of running the place.

Your putting 2+2 together and getting 5.

Its a local thing but not controlled by local authorities, is that too hard to understand?

You can waste your time if you want, the councillors will just say yeah and move on.

Do they not report key issues back to their party as brought up by their constituants?

Like up grade of schools/hospitals/sewage treatment plants etc. etc.

Generally if it's centrally funded, it's under your local TDs remit. Hospitals, schools, sewage, motorways, fire services, police etc.

If it's locally funded, as in if it's paid for by your local council out of their yearly budget, it's a councillors concern. Grass-cutting, water, fixing holes (small roads only), collecting bins, street-cleaning, libraries, that kind of thing.
