Poor Saorview signal/reception

I'm using an existing grid UHF external aerial that was in situ when I moved into the house. All has been working fine until the latest re-scan. I think I need to adjust the aerial but I'm not sure what transmitter I'm pointing at currently. I receive RTE1, +1, Jnr fine on Ch 44. RTE2 and the others are freezing/breaking up and I have very poor signal/quality figures on Ch 52. I'm down in a hollow so my options may be limited on what transmission site I can point towards - I had a look on the Saorview site but could not work out what locations matched what I am picking up. I'm in Nth East Clare.

Channel 52 would be from Ennistymon, mux 1. Mux 2 is channel 56.

Thanks for that - any idea what location Ch 44 / Mux 2 is ?

Woodcock Hill are on 47 and 44. Cnoic An Oir is also on these frequencies.

Cnoic An Oir would only make sense if you were in Kilkee.

    Where are you ?

Thanks - I'm out near Mountshannon but down in a hollow. I have hills nearly on all sides of me - the existing aerial is pointing at roughly 300 degrees (if that makes sense) which is the only 'flat' view I have - from the maps (leaving practicalities aside!) it would suggest Cairn Hill !!

The first respondent to this thread must have been thinking of northwest Clare, not northeast.

In the northeast, channel 52 & 56 would be Kilduff & this transmitter only started TV with Saorview, didn't have analogue, so maybe you could align your aerial there now.

Aerial pointing wrong way (if that is the only view ). Move aerial 180 and try Kilduff or Maghera or Ballina.

Mounthsannon was always a troublesome area especially for analog, mmds and mobile phone coverage....It sounds lIke Cairn Hill that you are getting your signal from.

What kind of signal levels are you getting on 44???

Have you tried scanning ch 47??

300 deg. would be Maghera with the bowties on the aerial facing in that direction.

Which transmitter does the Saorview coverage checker recommend for your location?

Realigning the aerial on the recommended transmitter could do the job considering that you appear to be pulling in signals from Kilduff/Cairn Hill etc. with that aerial.

44 & 47 you would think would be Woodcock Hill in that part of the country. Even if you could get Cairn Hill away down there, Woodcock is sure to be causing interference.

Did a manual scan on 47 with success - thanks for the suggestion:)

The checker recommends Kilduff. Unfortunately the aerial is located on the back wall of the house about 8ft off the ground. The proper solution is to relocate it to the front of the house and aim for Kilduff. But even at that I have hills in the way. My only 'line of sight' is towards Cairn Hill I believe - having said that I'm greatly surprised at the flexibility of the signal to get around these objects:) I'm now picking up Ch44 and 47 - its showing around 50% signal but picture quality is fine.

Yes, on the coverage checker, I notice a spot to your south where Cairn Hill is actually the recommended transmitter, about 75 miles distant.

I see now there are high mountains to the south that must be blocking interference from Woodcock Hill, & your house would also help if it's between the aerial & source of interference.
