Fire Engine Sirens On Main Road

I know someone who has recently bought a retired fire engine which he proposes to use as a ride for kids who visit his business in a rural area.

He intends blaring the sirens and using the blue flashing lights when driving it on the main road with kids seated in the back.

I told him I was pretty sure it would be illegal to blare sirens and lights from this fire engine on a main road.

Am I right in my assumption or is it ok for him to do this on a public road ?

    Thanks all

Pretty sure only an emergency services vehicle is allowed to have blue flashing lights and emergency sirens during the course of its duty. So in short no it would not be ok.

OP, you should send your friend the way of the Transport Museum in Howth for concise advise. They have a number of emergency vehicles preserved in working order and will know the legal stance for same.

As an aside, he will need to have the vehicle passed out by your local PSV officer if he wants to carry passengers; again the lads in Howth will be better positioned to advise accordingly than I would.

Actually this is what you are looking for - updated in 2011.

To answer the OP - yes it would be illegal. A "fire brigade vehicle" as defined in the regulations means a vehicle used by a fire authority (within the meaning of the Fire Services Act 1981 (No. 30 of 1981)) and includes a vehicle used by a senior fire officer in the performance of his or her duty as such officer.

I was wondering about that as I saw the later act after I posted, but then forgot about it. Was fairly certain that Varadkar would not have loosened the act to such a degree that anyone could simply drive around in a fire engine with the lights and siren on.

Thanks for the reply but all I can see from the above link is the law when it comes to the blue lamps on these vehicles, their dimensions and power etc.
But it doesnt say anything about it being illegal for sirens to be used on the road by non fire department personel as I reckon its the sirens that would probably be more of a nuisance to any houses he may pass.
    Thanks again for the help

Sirens would also be illegal under these regulations except for the vehicles set out in the SI. Same as blue light basically.
