Series Is from Award-winning Creator of “Luther,” Neil Cross, and Acclaimed Film Producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black,” “The Ring”)

NEW YORK CITY -- May 14, 2012 -- From the award-winning creator of “Luther,” Neil Cross, and successful producing team of Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black,” “The Ring”) comes an extraordinary action-adventure series “Crossbones” -- with an unexpected moral center where one can't be sure whether the pirates or the British crown are the villains.

Ten episodes of “Crossbones” have been ordered and production will begin in the fall.

The announcement was made today by Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

It’s 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise, this is a place like no other on earth – and a mounting threat to international commerce.

To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the pirates’ haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But The Closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple. Lowe can’t help but admire the political ideals of Blackbeard, whose thirst for knowledge knows no bounds – and no law. But Lowe is not the only danger to Blackbeard’s rule. He is a man with many villainous rivals and one great weakness – a passionately driven woman whom he cannot deny.

Parkes and MacDonald serve as executive producers. Cross will write and also executive-produce the series. Ted Gold (“Three Rivers”) also is an executive producer. The series will be produced by Parkes/MacDonald Productions; Georgeville Television (GVTV), Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital's new TV Studio; and Universal Television.

so fletch (the monkey) is for the dumb audience to explain everything to them

It wasn't as strong as I was hoping it would be but overall I liked it. I can however see Fletch getting very annoying very fast if they continue with having him explain everything or having everything explained to him.

Watched the first 3 episodes so far

It all seems very familiar after watching Black Sails

    Malkovich's accent is woeful
He's supposed to be English but sounds almost eastern European

I know this is a small thing but does the uniform of the English soldiers bug anyone else? Every time I see one of them it looks like they were (badly) dressed for a school play rather than as a soldiers in a powerful army.

Not sure about the uniforms. The red trousers kinda seems out of place for me. Just comparing it to Turn, the uniforms on that seem much more authentic. Then again, I'm not an expert in British Naval uniforms!

Three episodes in and I generally like it so far. Malkovich wasn't really impressing me until episode 3. His accent is all over the place. I just don't get it. For some reason also his monotonic, staccato delivery in the first two episodes really grated on me. I found myself thinking "SPEAK PROPERLY MAN!!". In some ways I find it a little more immediate than Black Sails. BS took a while to even get on the water. This has some seafaring almost every episode which is great. I'm really warming to the doctor. I think they've done some good work on the casting front. I'm looking forward to more episodes!

Yeah it just seems to me that they don't look like they fit and just in general seem to be missing half the uniform. I could be completely wrong of course and maybe these are perfect replicas of what would have been worn during the early 1700's but compared to any other show they just look cheap and sort of lacking.

Thats a good point actually and something which bugged me about Black Sails was the whole lack of being on ships and general piratey stuff :pac:

I'm enjoying it so far, despite Malkovich's accent. The lack of 'exposition boy' in the latest episode really helped, I hope he takes more of a back seat from now on.

    I am enjoying.

I was kind of hoping Malkovich would be more over the top with his performance.

Everytime I see Richard Coyle I think he is Michael Sheen.

I saw an interview just last weak - Malkiovich said he mixed in Jamican (or carribean maybe) because Teach spent most of his life away from England so wanted him to sound more exotic

Can someone explain to me the point of the mission to
    get copy the map
    ?
I was supposed to lead Blackbeard to a hidden Spanish treasury but then he goes and sells the Spaniard a copy of the chronometer and he standing outside the treasure room getting paid!!!

    Seems kind of pointless.

Ah that's a shame! It's only really getting going and it's not actually a bad show. Christ there's more deserving of the axe out there right now. The show wasn't spectacularly great but was relatively decent. Kind of sorry to see it go. I think Black Sails could learn a bit from it.
