i have a 130bhp 02 model, would the 140bhp one be similar on diesel?

My 1.9tdi 105 golf does 55mpg with a mix of motorway and back roads. Probably does even a bit more on long journeys and a bit less if I'm doing a lot of town trips. Provided you aren't doing all town driving or short trips even the heavier passat should do far more than 40mpg with that 1.9tdi engine 50mpg I recon but then it's all dependant on the type of trips you do.

its pretty confusing in my books, from what i see the 105 is as heavy on juice as the 140, wheres the advantages in that?

2.0 TDI 140 Bhp all the way... the B6 is a bigger and heavier car than its predecessor (I've owned both)

Also you'll get a lot of horror stories about injector failures on early (05-08) 2.0 TDI models. While true, VW issued a recall about 2 years back to replace these free of charge so just make sure any car you look at with that engine has had this done - mine was done as a precaution during a regular service.

As with most diesels nowadays, make sure the timing belt has been done and check out the flywheel - will sound like a scratching/rattle while she idles. Both consumables really but expensive if they need doing.

Aside from that, great cars and comfortable motorway cruisers - I have no idea about MPG figures but mine (a 06 2.0 TDI with DSG) did about 1100km to a full tank of mostly motorway runs which at the time cost around €100 per fill.

sounds good, im leaning towards the 140, id have went for the 105 if the mpg was better but it doesnt seem to be by much lol

MPG will be roughly the same if there driven the same. The 140 would have the potential to be more thirsty with a heavy right foot though.

If costs were a concern i'd be wondering:

Which 2.0's chew their oil pump drive shaft?

Are the DMF's more likely to fail with the extra torque? Are they more expensive to repair in the 2.0?

    Which ones have DPF's?

If I remember right, the drive shaft issue was an A4/A6 problem, not the Passat? Stand to be corrected though.

DMF failure is a fact of life with any modern diesel so unfair to hold it against the Passat. Once mine was changed it did another 150k+ without a problem.

DPF's I think they all have? Again never caused me a problem though as I did mostly long motorway runs

That fuel consumption I quoted was with high speed motorway and N-road driving. I do the limit whenever safe/appropriate :)

I though the earlier B6's had no DPF. Could be wrong too:P.
