I got some helpful advice here a few months ago about upgrading my machine, but due to circumstances I never got a chance to do it.
My budget is a bit better now, and requirements have changed slightly, so I'm going to take another shot at it.

    1. What is your budget?
Around 800 without monitor, or 1000 including.

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
Gaming (ArmA, Bioshock Infinite, anything new really)
Development (Web, Android) either dual booting into one or more linux distros or running them virtually

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows?
    Yes, Win 7 preferably

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?
    DVD burner

    5. Do you need a monitor? If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
    Currently have a 17" 1280x1024.
Hoping to upgrade either with the build or soon to something decent, maybe a 22". Would like to run both monitors for development.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? (Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.)
    Keyboard, Mouse, Card reader

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking?
Not just yet as it's my first build. If it's an option for the future without costing too much more, great, but not crucial

    8. How can you pay?
    Bank Transfer is fine

    9. When are you purchasing?
    Ideally this week

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based?
North Dublin, but hope to be able to manage it myself

I've taken the previous build suggestions I was given and looked at some other threads, and cobbled together this:

    Item|Price
    Corsair VS Serie VS550, Non-Modular, 80+|€44.99
    Intel Core i5-4440 Box, LGA1150|€157.03
    Crucial M500 240GB SATA 6GB/s 6,4CM (2,5") 7mm|€97.50
    LG GH24NS bare schwarz|€13.51
    8GB-Kit Crucial Ballistix Sport Series DDR3-1600, CL9|€58.24
Corsair Carbide Series 200R, ATX, ohne Netzteil|€50.73
    ASUS GTX760-DC2OC-2GD5, GeForce GTX 760, 2GB GDDR5|€218.37
    TP-LINK TL-WN881ND Netzwerkkarte/-adapter|€11.99
    LogiLink USB 2.0 all-in-one Card Reader, für 3,5" Einbauchschacht|€3.99
    WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€49.80
    ASRock H81M-HDS, Sockel 1150, mATX|€42.19
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€767.33

    Notes:
    - I haven't run it through Geizhals yet
    - I'm not really concerned about aesthetics for the case, I'm the only one who'll see it. Something with decent dust filters would be a plus. And maybe some space to work in as it's my first build.
    - The 240B might be overkill for the SSD so I could probably save 50 there if I need to.
    - I'm not sure if I need any additional cooling?
    - That's without a monitor, keyboard or mouse (any recommendations?), or Windows - I'm assuming there's cheaper places to get that.
    - Is there anything else obvious that I'm missing?

Any other advice/suggestions would be welcome.

    How about this monitor?: http://www.hardwareversand.de/56+cm+%2822%29+/74645/LG+Flatron+22EA53VQ-P.article
It all looks good and a 120gb ssd would be enough. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T BUY A GERMAN KEYBOARD!!! they are qwertz not qwerty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Maybe get the antec one. Better case only 47 euro using Geizhals.de . And in stock for a change.

Be quiet 7 500w silver rating . 53 euro. Worth the extra 8 euro.

Good point on the keyboard, forgotten about that. Guess I'll pick one up somewhere else.

    Cheers for those suggestions.

With those changes, and after running through Geizhals, I'm now looking at:

    Code|Item|Price
    HV12CZS8DE|  Crucial M500 120GB SATA 6GB/s 6,4CM (2,5") 7mm |57.35
    HV25TWMLDE|  TP-LINK TL-WN881ND Netzwerkkarte/-adapter |11.38
    HV2122QADE|  LG Flatron 22EA53VQ-P |115.99
    HV20LC23DE|  LogiLink USB 2.0 all-in-one Card Reader, für 3,5" Einbauchschacht |3.99
    HV13W1CBDE|  WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's |46.49
    HVR501SBDE|  be quiet! SYSTEM POWER 7 500W - bulk - |52.59
    HV1136RVDE|  ASRock H81M-HDS, Sockel 1150, mATX |38.48

HV203E41DE|  Antec One, ATX, ohne Netzteil |47.80

    Shipping| |18.99
    Total| |€803.48

Even allowing up to 80 quid for Windows (unless there's cheaper options?) and what, maybe 50 for a keyboard and decent mouse, I've still nearly €100 to play with. Don't think I'm missing anything else - I don't need additional cooling unless I'm overclocking?

Should I be looking at upgrading the 760? I can get this 770 for €268 (about 60 quid extra) through Geizhals.

Or is there more benefit to going for the i7-4770 for €246, an extra 100?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭DERPY DERPFACE

The difference between i7's and i5's is the i7's have hyper threading: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hyperthreading-technology-explained/
The xeon e3 1230v3 has hyper threading but the same price as i5 4670k- around 200. If you choose the 4670k you will need a z87 or h87 motherboard if you want to overclock it or you could get 4670. You would also be able to get a 770.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,465 ✭✭✭MOH

Thanks for the options, appreciate the suggestions. Realistically, I don't know that I'll ever get around to overclocking, so probably makes more sense to get the hyperthreading benefit from the Xeon than going the Z87/4670K route.

That HWV PC configurator is doing my head in. Hadn't realised it restricts your options depending on the other components you've selected.

When I upgraded the 760 to a 770 it forced me to pick a PSU of at least 630W.
Also, with the Xeon it forced me to add cooling, and it's also recommending thermal paste, do I need that?
I've dropped the network adapter, since there's a connection on the mobo I assume i don't need it.
I've now got this (also upgraded the mobo to a H87):

    Code|Item|Price
    HV1135RFDE|ASRock H87M Pro4, Sockel 1150, mATX|62,43 €
    HV30CM35DE|Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - Intel/AMD|27,98 €
    HV20XE33DE|Intel Xeon E3-1230v3 Bx, LGA1150|203,24 €
    HV13W1CBDE|WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's|46,98 €
    HV12CZS8DE|Crucial M500 120GB SATA 6GB/s 6,4CM (2,5") 7mm|57,23 €
    HV1032UUDE|ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5 DirectCU II OC, GeForce GTX 770, 2GB GDDR5|267,98 €
    HV2122QADE|LG Flatron 22EA53VQ-P|115,99 €
    HV20MI48DE|8GB-Kit Crucial Ballistix Sport Series DDR3-1600, CL9|54,76 €
    HVR652CSDE|Corsair VS Serie V650, Non-Modular, 80+|51,34 €
    HV203E41DE|Antec One, ATX, ohne Netzteil|47,80 €
    HV20LC23DE|LogiLink USB 2.0 all-in-one Card Reader, für 3,5" Einbauchschacht|3,99 €
    Shipping| | 18.99 €
    Total| |958.71

Allowing for Windows and a mouse/keyboard, it's a little over budget, but it'll
    do.

Just not sure about the mobo and PSU, and the thermal paste.

Also, silly question, I assume the only difference between the box and tray version of the CPU is the packaging?

You can just add the parts to your basket instead of using the pc configurator.
That motherboard is matx and the case is atx. About the box and tray I'm not sure.

Box cpu comes with standard cooler. Tray is just the cpu.

is that build that costs 803 euros a better option than getting a ps4 can anyone tell me please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,465 ✭✭✭MOH

I'm trying to pull the trigger on this now that I've finally got the budget this month, plus my current PSU is rapidly on the way out, , but I'm having a couple of problems.

    - I'm trying to upgrade the H87M to a H97M, but the HWV Pc Configurator doesn't seem to like this in combination with the Xeon. As far as I can see the Xeon is listed as supported on the AsRock site. Am I missing some problem or can I just go ahead and add it to the basket separately?

    - The PSU is out of stock, any suggestions for a replacement?

    - Am I likely to need the Cooler Master since I won't be overclocking, will he stock Xeon cooler be OK?

It's a 1150 socket mobo , CPU as you said is listed so don't worry. It's just like the forced 600+ PSU situation when you are getting the Gpu.

Stock cooler is fine. And will do till you get around to it.

Ps because you are using the pc configuration it will have pc assembly option ticked yes as default.

    :(

PSU is now delivery date unknown, TP-link is late, and the Antec One case is out of stock.
(I know it's due in tomorrow, but so was the PSU, so I'd rather not wait and order today if possible).

Any suggestions for replacements? (Not too bothered about the wireless)

BTW, Geizhals is a bit weird today. The GTX770 is about 12 euro dearer going through them. I think HWV may have dropped the price and they haven't caught up yet. The SSD was a couple of euro dearer to. Ended up clearing my HWV cookies and starting again

Thanks a million. Is that modular? Though I'm not that fussed.

Any idea on a case? I've seen the Carbide 300R suggested in other threads, although it's a bit of a step up pricewise from the Antec One.

    Not modular unfortunately.

Amazon antec one 55 deliverd. Or get the carbide. Both good cases.

Sterling, you're a legend, thanks again.
    Going to order that now.

[edit] No I'm not, the bloody H97M is out of stock now. I think that's a sign I'm not supposed to pul; the trigger today

    ASUS H97-PLUS, Sockel 1150, ATX

Again more expensive. But has an extra PCI express slot.

Good news is you have a decent setup. Pretty much same as my own. I get ultra on Rome2, very high on arma3 . 1 paid 1400 for mine and that is without a monitor ugh.

    .

At this stage I'm willing to throw an extra 50 quid in for the Carbide and the H97 just to get the damn thing ordered! :)

Just to clarify, do you mean the H97M-Plus as opposed to the H97-Plus?
If I'm not going for the mATX, the ATX H97 Pro is available, it's just the H97M that's out of stock.

Although at this stage I can't even remember why I decided on mATX in an ATX case, I think I had a theory that for my first build I'd have more space to work with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,465 ✭✭✭MOH

Just happened to check and 2 H97Ms had just come back into stock, along with the PSU, so finally got the order in.

Thanks a million to SterlingArcher and everyone else who's given me advice on this and my original thread 6 months ago.
I'm sure I'll be back with build issues, but hopefully won't take me another 6 months to get it running!

Well, that was a frustrating 4 hours.

Finally got everything assembled only to then realise the motherboard seems to have shipped without any SATA cables :(
The manual lists the package contents as "2 SATA Data Cables (Optional)", which is a bit annoying.

Powers on OK, although I'm not getting any beep. Can't be bother unpacking the monitor at this stage to check what's up. Actually, didn't have the keyboard plugged in, could be that

The stock cooler is really noisy. Not just loud, but an irritating whirry sound - I'll try to post a vid tomorrow. Mind you that's just at boot, haven't left it running for any length of time so maybe it calms down.

Also, maybe I'm missing something, but I've got a DVD drive from the old machine - (NEC 7173). Just realised it's IDE. Can work out where to plug it into the H97M, if that's even possible. I'm more than half asleep though.
If not, I'll pick up a new DVD drive while I'm in buying cables tomorrow.

    Leave that sheet till tomo.

Stock cooler shouldn't be making a swirly sound. Look at it tomo make sure nothing is catching...might be just on start up. (running a stock one at this moment).

Anyway let us know how you get on.

Cheers. Just unpacked the monitor and when mounted on the stand seems to be tilted forward at a 15 degree angle. Doesn't seem to be adjustable.
That's enough for one night anyway!!

Well, that's a valuable lesson learned from my first build: don't keep doing this stuff when you're exhausted:

    - Of course the monitor stand tilts,I just wasn't applying enough pressure;
    - It wasn't the cooler fan making the noise, it was the GPU fan. Because one of the case fan cables was brushing against it. Running pretty quiet now.
    - Went into Maplins, paid €20 (!!!) for two SATA cables, came home and found that the only thing on my desk apart from the case, right in front of me, was the pack with the two SATA cables that had come with the mobo. Don't know how I missed them last night and this morning.
    - Didn't bother buying an IDE-SATA converter, a DVD drive, or any plug adapters cos Maplins prices are crazy. I'll get them when I order a keyboard/mouse online. Bought an 8GB USB stick instead for the install.
    - So now I'm trying to set up dual windows/linux boot using a single USB stick. Got the drives partitioned with Ubuntu live, installing Windows now, hopefully good to go after that.

On the plus side, everything seems to be finally up and running fairly smoothly. Though I am laughing at myself for thinking I'd have it all done in 90 minutes :p

Ha, funny that. When I installed steam I discovered I'd bought Arma2 a year or so ago in anticipation of a new PC. I'll get through that first, then maybe 3!
