Has your Email/Facebook/Twitter/Wi-Fi ever been hacked or compromised?

Am just off the phone with a friend who sounded quite traumatised as it would seem her Facebook has been hacked. I told her to get onto Facebook immediately as she mentioned there's some quite sensitive stuff in her FB mails that could be exploited.

Is it really that easy for someone to do this with such a big a company as Facebook? Has your Website/Email/Facebook/Twitter/Wi-Fi ever been hacked or compromised? It now has me a little paranoid!

Twitter has, seems quite easy to do.
Facebook or none of the others, never..

And the adrenaline rush was such that your first port of call was boards to tell us the bad news?

Yeah this is why I keep all my personal private sensitive information on FB and alike using the same password for all sites, I always tell people my status like I’m on holiday and wonder why my house has been broken into. Oh wait I think I do the exact opposite.

Having your Facebook is truly traumatising for sure, alot worse than your banking getting hacked.

I'd say 95% of social media 'hackings' are just people using passwords that suck. Using the forgot your password button and answering the secret question that comes up based on your publicly available data.

Just tell her to stay calm and follow the instructions for the drop of and all will be ok!!

My Facebook was hacked about a year ago. Actually hacked, not someone guessing my password.

Loads of foreign spam/virus links sent to my contacts, and my phone number spammed.

Annoying, but not a big deal when you compare it to bank accounts being hacked, or even my email.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,973 ✭✭✭Sh1tbag OToole

No. I hacked others FB though (not the usual 'frape while they go to the jacks' nonsense). Had a good few accounts got and I used to use them for divilment. It was depressing though if you look around in them it really rings home how shallow people are, like this one girl had a group of lads who were blocked from seeing the 'nice' pics she put up.

Your remaining smidgin of faith in humanity dont be long going when you start reading the conversations people do be having on there. I cant really cod myself into thinking the social stuff is good fun and the social butterflies are salt of the earth well meaning people who want to help their fellow man now that Ive seen the inner workings of how people carry on on fb.

I did have a VoiP phone hacked before. Silly mistake I think, cost me a bit of credit.

One Wifi access point I run I leave open on purpose but I dont think anyone realy uses it because its in the backarse of nowhere. Though its open its set up in such a way so they cant easily get at the other traffic on the network

Not saying I don't believe you but just curious, how did you know it was one or the other?

Had E-mail hacked about 2 yrs ago, but in fairness to Eircom they sorted it fairly quickly. On a side note, I change my router name to Dept_Soc_Welfare_Investigations every couple of months for a few hours, just to **** with my neighbours heads. It actually works. Even heard it talked about down the pub. :)

Yeah, but, why would you think that anyway?

Yeah, but, why would you think that anyway?

All the people down at the pub seem to think so and talk along with the bullsh1t but I find that hard going. I just sit at the bar and mumble 'pricks' under my breath and take another sip of over priced craft beer

But it was fair game to access people's personal accounts though, right? :/

Only my Amazon account. Feckers bought something too, which in fairness to Amazon was stopped before the sale went through, I was oblivious until I got the mail from Amazon's security team, they reset my passwords etc.

Still miffed how they got in though, my password would be fairly complicated. (so it wasn't guessed)

How? Why did someone actually bother to hack your fb account just to do that? Seems like a lot of effort.

Are you sure you didn't give permission to a third party in Facebook through an app?(using fb to sign up)

Someone tried to hack my email today but I nipped it in the bud. It was scary, though- for a second I thought I'd lost all my contacts! D:
Had a full blown hack attack on an old Hotmail account a few years ago. Starting from scratch was an absolute pain in the proverbial, let me tell you.

Its scripts that do that. More often than not its a script that tries to gett 100s of accounts to fill with spam. Most people dont get lucky enough to be hacked 'by hand'

Quite a nasty attitude to have, let's hope you don't have anything you don't want accessed at any point in the future, lest it taint your infallible status.

I can look in friend's file cabinets, it doesn't mean I should. Moral standards.

My Twitter was, it just sent junk mail to people. Oh and my pinterest account too, it posted weird diet things to a board I never created.

So that makes it ok for you to violate their trust and their privacy?

You read peoples personal conversations, and you have the nerve to call them depressing and pass judgement on them?

Jesus. You're some piece of work.

Never been hacked, but then again I use fairly complex passwords that are only relevant to me personally and probably not used by someone else.

Had my Facebook hacked. Was really weird cos I let my sister borrow my laptop and she logged me out (shes not the fraping kind) and I was on my phone on FB. Then say myself posting. Shouted at my sister to log me out thinking she was messing and it wasn't her.
Freaked me out seeing myself posting when it wasn't me and talking to myself. Deactivated the account on the spot and changed everything. Still no idea how or who it was or how long they had access.

Twitter yes but i think everyone has been hacked at one time or another on there. Not sure why it happens so often. Seem to get a DM once a week with some ropey link with a ha ha look what you did. Just delete them.

    Sounds like dodgy spyware?

Yep, I had a hotmail email for ages that ended up getting hacked or something similar. I only used it for my Facebook / Youtube account, there was no sensitive info like bank stuff on there so it wasn't a huge loss!

Would dodgy spyware be chatting to me though? As me. Was very weird indeed.

I assume it was my Facebook rather than my phone because the fb spam started first, but I could be wrong :)

Mine was hacked about a two years ago. Facebook sent me a message to say someone was using my account on a device near Casablanca in Morocco. So I confirmed it wasn't me and changed my password. As I was never a big facebook user and had very few pictures up it didn't bother me too much. Still though I wonder how and why. Maybe my password was easy to figure out.Now I don't even bother with facebook and have closed my account. Have to say would have been very worried if I had pictures of my child up thankfully I hadn't. You can never be too careful though.

I've never had anything hacked, I'm pretty careful but these things happen so I'm sure that something will happen eventually.
