Cheapest DIY Wheel Refurb

    I bought a set of Speedlines off a 205 GTi to fit my C5 almost a year ago, but they were badly in need of a refurb. A couple of weeks ago I decided to tackle it. What you can see in the photos is what they looked like, that oily stuff was part of the alloy and would not come off without taking paint with it. I priced up a refurb, but at €200+ it just wasn't an option.

    At €200+ for a refurb, that just was not an option. I priced up some 2K paint and laquer, but that was still too pricy for my budget. So after a trip to Halfrauds, I found this

    2 cans came to €30, and it doesn't need primer or laquer. Perfect!

    I sanded the alloys down with 150 grit, paying particular attention to the kerb rash. I didn't bother picking up fillers, so I just did my best to smooth off the kerb marks as much as possible. I also didn't bother going up the grades of sandpaper for a glass finish, I'd rather have a nicely keyed surface for the paint to stay on rather than a slightly shinier end finish.

    After sanding, I gave them a quick wash and dry, then 4-5 coats of hammerite (I'm not the most organised, so some wheels got 4 coats while some got 6 :pac:). I left them 15 mins to dry between coats, and gave them a rub with damp 2500 grit. Another quick rinse and wash and then the final coat:

    As you can see, the finish is not bad at all for a rattle can. The flash makes that last one look a bit glossier than reality. But the photo shows that the kerb rash is nicely hidden.

    For €30, I'm delighted with the finish. It's been through a few washes and no signs of peeling or flaking. The only hiccup was at the tyre fitters, I now have a lovely score the whole way around the rim and will not be returning to said fitters.

    They just need centre caps fitted and that'll do for now. They're only temporary until I find a tidy set of 16" OEMs. The 15"s are just big enough for the brakes, the wheel weights you can see in the last photo are contacting the calliper :pac:

    Here's what came off! A set of 17" Kahns, I had them on the C5 but they really don't suit it. A shame really, as I had to source wheel spacers to correct the offset on the Kahns for the Citroen :mad:

    Cheers. They are the right size, it's even on the tyre pressure label inside the door that the car came with 195 65 R15. I've always thought they looked a bit small though, they don't fill the arches at all. That's why I'm on the lookout for 16"s to replace them eventually :)

    That's pretty impressive. I might do the same with my 04 Celica alloys.
