Flooring - laminate or semi solid ?

Planning on putting down floors in new house currently with timber floor finish , but which one ?
Thinking along the following lines :

    • Living room and hallway - good quality (AC4) laminate or semi solid ?

    • bedrooms - laminate as above

Is the difference in the price of semi solid v laminate worth it in terms of quality, wear and tear etc ? Budget can't stretch to solid wood at this stage !
    Any advice welcome !

This is a very difficult question to answer, and its usually up to each customer.

Just because you spend €80 m2 on a walnut engineered floor does not mean its any way better quality than €40 m2 oak floor :) Quality is not dictated by price.

It depends what you want, a laminate will not look or sound as good as an engineered floor, however, real wood marks and scuffs much much easier than a good laminate, so if you have no young children or pets, and are prepared to take care of your floor then semi-solid is the route.

Laminates have come an awful long way from the cheap nasty floors of a few years ago. AC4/5 floors are top notch and pretty much hassle free, just make sure that you get a decent underlay to make them sound better. If price is an issue for you and you are looking at a good laminate vs the cheaper semi-solids, quality wise the laminate will win hands down.

tenbob mentions young children and pets, and looking after your floor. The biggest damage to real wood floors is done by high heels, the cheapest laminate will outperform the dearest wood when treatened by high heels.

This is true as well. Really its lifestyle, dents and marks are part of the character of a real wooden floor, some people love it, some hate it, its up to each individual customer.
