VW Golf TDI MK5 (2005) Reverse Switch

    Hey Guys,

NTC next week and my reverse light won't come on. I've checked the usual things like bulbs, holders, fuses and all are fine. Logic says it the switch on the gear box, apparently it's common for the cable to snap.

Can't for the life of me find the thing though!
Anyone changed this before? Or have a Golf MK5 and wanna take a snap of it's location?

I'm wondering if it's a DIY job. I've changed things like a faulty fuel pump and alternator before but I reckon this might be a remove half the engine to get to kinda job.

If you remove the battery and tray it should be apparent where the linkages are heading.

Had a quick look down and nothing obvious is wrong with the switch. Would still need to take out a couple more things to actually pull it out. But...

Before I do, I just noticed when I put the car into reverse the rear wiper still comes on. Surely this means the switch is working? How else would it know to switch on the rear wiper?

What else could I check? I'm armed with a multimeter!

Someone would have to confirm, but if the MKV is a 2.0TDI and has the same layout as the 1.9TDI on the Mark 4 it is a DIY job and the switch is by the gear linkage on the passenger side of the engine bay. I'd guess the 1.9 TDI would be laid out the same on the MK4 and 5.

Rather than the cable snapping in my case, the switch just failed.

You we're right, it was pretty much exactly the same as the MK4 - pic below for anyone else who ever goes looking.

The switched checked out, so I wen't looking from broken wires and found a shocking amount of them. Both looms hidden in the rubber covers on each side of the boot hinge.

Cut each of the covers away (you've no choice really) and soldered then taped all the broken wires. Bingo reverse light is back! :D

I'd love to know what the yellow cable did though....
