I believe the worst mistake RTE Radio ever made was keeping Gerry Ryan on 2fm for so long, They should have moved him to radio 1 in 1999 when Gay Byrne retired. Gerry Ryan held 2fm back from being reinvented as a youth station in the 00s, Whenever they tried a youth breakfast show it flopped with G ryans aging listenership.

Yeah but in the late nineties would 2fm have been a better station overall then when Gerry did die ? If Gerry had taken over from gay Byrne would 2fm not have been forced to build the station without him and it would be a better station now then it is now.

    This again.
He's dead nearly 4 years now. Let it go.

I don't believe that the demise of 2FM is wholly attributable to G Ryan's death: Today FM took those looking for chatter and FM104 the youth looking for popular music, and Ryan couldn't have prevented that.

It's difficult to predict what would have happened had he not gone to 2FM, but the station, until a few months ago, was entirely without an identity, and it's conceivable that it would have found one a lot sooner, and could have flourished when ad revenue was such that the station was self-financing.

It's too late for 2FM trying to be strictly a youth station and more importantly only playing hits from the past 15 years.

I think when they were playing the hits of the day and oldies thrown in worked for any age....over the past 30 years.

What they are doing now is like trying to convert Radio 1 into a current affairs station for students.

It was actually refreshing to hear Aidan Leonard playing some 80s hits on the Golden Hours at the weekend!! Ireland is just not a country for a national station to just play chart and recent hits only.

And not just them, Beat, Spin and iRadio have taken huge dents out of 2fm listenership since launch, hence the boss of 2fm was once the boss of one of those regional youth stations.

    This too shall pass.

Can you imagine Gerry Ryan on radio 1? As his show ends the angelus starts? Wow its like a bad acid trip!
I loved him on 2fm & listened to him for over 20 years.
I thought it a big mistake moving rRyan tuberty to 2fm.

Agree on that, Tubberty doesn't click with the age group the station is aimed at.

Any fool would have figured that out, apart from RTE apparently.

Anyone else read this load of tripe in the Indo?

She bled him to death. Luckily for her and her family, he had a decent life insurance policy that saved their house. He had moved on, obviously she never did. Still living off his name. If she was such a talented artist, why didn't she make a living from it?

I'm a huge Gerry Ryan fan myself but that is very harsh. You have no idea why they separated. Till the day he died he spent hours in the family home with Moira & the kids.

Yeah, bit too much there, tbh.

Gerry was reckless and irresponsible, after that it's just speculation. And in poor taste tbh (not least judging by the reception the partner's book received.)

I don't have much time for his partner. It wasn't much of a relationship if she didn't know he took drugs. Every one on the street knew for 20 years. She's either lying or didn't know him at all.

After years of mega bucks, seems he was still unable to accommodate himself.

    That's unbelievable.

No wonder he was bigging up Harry Crosbie all the time, given that the man was keeping the roof over his head.

And yes, I agree regarding the partner, she knew well...
