Passport renewal question Re Birth Cert...?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, please feel free to move to the correct forum but just a quick question.
My son has just discovered his passport is due for renewal and needs it done fairly quickly, he can't find his long form birth cert, but does he actually need it...?

The form just says to ensure he's enclosed his birth certificate "if applicable" but I can't find anything on there that says when it's applicable.
I searched online and found one item on the citizens advice page that said to enclose your birth cert and another that says you no longer need it...?

It says here you need to provide original Birth and Marriage certs...

It says here you don't need a birth cert (although I'm sure I found a similar page earlier that says you do)...

He just needs to send his old passport along with the renewal application. I did that a couple of months ago and all was well, they didnt ask for anything else.

If he is under 18 he will need his birth cert.
This link to the passport website allows you to put a DOB in and tells you exactly what's required

If your son is under 18 he will need the long version of his birth certificate. This can be easily obtained from your local registrar of Births Marriages and Deaths - but it costs €20. It will only take a matter of minutes.

If he's over 18 the old passport is fine, UNLESS he has changed his name by marriage or otherwise and wishes the birth certificate name to be included on the passport.

Had the same rigamarole with my kids passports last week.

AND make sure he has the photos done correctly. Right size, no teeth showing and take off his glasses if he wears them. Much easier to take off glasses when being checked than remove reflections from the lenses (I ended up having to get 3 sets of photos done for my daughter grrrr).

Further confirmation that if your child is under 18 he needs his birth cert. Easily got at the Health Centre in any town as long as he was born in Ireland but cost you €20:eek:

The actual answer is, regardless of age his old passport is all the is required. The birthcert is only required on a first application or if replacing a lost passport. Both the guard who signs the form and the post officer worker will verify this.

The Guard will verify that if he is under 18 regardless of how many Passports he's had he needs his birth cert.

Nonsense - I renewed my 12 year old's passport a couple of months ago and initially it could not be processed because I didn't include her birth cert.

I already linked that site a few posts above and it shows that U-18s need their original long-form birth cert for passport renewals.
Pick a date within the last 18 years and try it out if you are still sceptical.

I have posted two links which state that a child under 18 has to send his long form birth cert for a passport renewal another poster has also posted one of the links. You are refusing to accept that you are wrong and have no interest at all in helping the OP. Its ridiculous.
