Is there a thread in the News and Media forum on TV3's recent losses of GAA and ITV programming? Just wondering what the media heads are thinking.

Thought this could be the thread if their isn't another one.

Plenty of discussion, on these topics, in the broadcasting forum.

I was trying to avoid my own opinion. To see how people on this thread felt about the changes that will take place for TV3 in 2015.

They have lost a large portion of the ITV programming to UTV, their GAA to Sky, while they have just bought RWC 2015.

I am surprised that in News and Media there is no thread on this subject.

As I said I a very surprised that TV3's loss of certain programmes has not been discussed on News and Media.

I am not a fan of TV3. I think they have done a pretty woeful job in their 16 years on the air. Since 2001 they have relied on Coronation Street to bring in an audience. The website lack any news or sport.

The fact that their Xposé site had to provide the news they had won the rights to the RWC 2015 shows something is very wrong.

TV3 are in a mess. They have just recently bought back their outstanding Anglo/IRBC/NAMA loans, while loosing their main programmes to UTV.

Vincent Browne can be good but it can also be tiring and aggravating.

The new soap will be interesting and that they have brought in English and Irish producers may help it to survive, but can TV3 hold out on this project into the long term? The soap will gain some initial novelty following, it will see a drop and then it may rise but how long for it to be consider a main Soap Opera, in a saturated market when most go out 5 night a week. In terms of live TV where will they schedule such a programme, is Soap Opera dead?

Since ITV and Canwest sold TV3 they have seen a increase in home produce prime time shows, largely reality or tabloid news docs. But they fail to hold on to audiences, though this could be down to how often they get repeated.

UTV is a big blow to TV3, if it is able to provide the same kind of TV as what TV3 provide now, TV3 will be dead in the water.

TV3 on the other hand haven't aimed to increase their audience share in the first 4 months of the year, with no increases, though BTG may lift that.

So just a few media sources on some of the new programmes launched by TV3 in the coming year.

Irish Times - TV3 unveils ‘Red Rock’ harbour town soap - Laura Slattery

Irish Indo - TV3 unveil details of new soap 'Red Rock' and Irish Gogglebox in mid-season update - CAITLIN MCBRIDE

Irish Indo - TV3 unveils new faces as it gears up for ratings battle with newcomer UTV - KIRSTY BLAKE KNOX

Irish Indo - I'm backing this minnow despite odds - DARRAGH MCMANUS

The Mirror - TV3 buy the rights to make Irish version of hit Channel 4 show Gogglebox - Demelza De-Burca

Irish Times - Red Rock - Una Mullally

The Herald - ComedianByrne to host new TV3 show - MELANIE FINN

Marketing.ie - TV3’s new soap gets Red Rock working title

NewsTalk - TV3 to make Irish Gogglebox - Sandra Roche

TBI Vision - TV3, RDF are Sitting on a Fortune

Looks like the Indo <3 TV3

The announcement is nothing that hasn't really been stated before in newspapers. TV3 will have RWC2015 (in HD), TV3 won't have Corro St but a new Irish Soap, TV3 will increase spend on Irish Productions.

The only surprising news was that its 12:45 news gets an extra 15mins. How about axing Xposé or the only major new programme that may not be all that safe is Red Rock.

Just to put some numbers and comparatives on this I have an attachment. It’s “Top_progs.pdf” and shows the numbers tuning into ‘domestic stations’ individual programmes week ending 04/05/14. It has numbers.

So the TV3 top 10 would be:
    Coronation Street
    Emmerdale
    Britain's Got Talent
    UEFA Champions League
    Cast Away
    TV3 News: The 5:30
    All Star Mr & Mrs
    The Cube
    Catchphrase
    The Peter Mark Vip Show

Why are the numbers different from what RTE publishes on Aertel? Also...is the source of that data publically accessible?

    Eagled eyed as ever!

In short i don't know - i retrieved the numbers from Medialive.ie and they state that they are Week Ending 04/05/2014

so i don't know where the confusion/difference arises between the two

Interesting if that is the cause, because I don't believe 10% of Primetime's audience is under fifteen.

Actually it could be because Medialive give viewers in Multichannel land only for over 15s

    Figured - a col l left out was TVR's.

The Late Late has a TVR of 15.2 with 520,000, giving a total potential audience of 3421 - which is exactly equal to the adult 15+ audience base.

So RTE aeirtel use the all (or plus four i think it is). Medialive use the 15+

(since I flung the muck I felt obliged to clean the fan)

I don't understand what you mean. Was that in response to my questioning the accuracy of the ratings?

Sorry 10% of the audience for Prime Time are children, I think that Medialive use the figures for people using UPC and Sky service, and don't include those who don't use those broadcast services.

Medialive figures are for +15 with a subscription based service such as Sky and UPC.

RTÉ and TVNow are all viewers.

Thank you - I understand. I'm surprised you are so confident that so many children watch Prime Time, though.

with reports of UTV news not getting many viewers I was wondering if anyone watches TV3 news, I think i only purposely watched it once when they chose to report on Lenihan's illness, am I missing anything, indo said tv3 5:30 news gets 180k viewers RTE 6 550K and UTV Ireland 6 news 28k but early days for them. I rarely watch the RTE 6 news but if there a big story I'll usually watch it there. Should I try the catch up service?

I watched UTV news twice, and havnt' since, am I missing anything not watching the long running TV3 news

5:30 News comes on after Judge Judy I assume as that has a good audience they stay for the news. But I agree I rarely watch TV3 News. No there is little on TV3 News that's not available elsewhere.

you can see UTV Ireland listing their exclusives http://utv.ie/articles/tags/Politics ho hum

tv3 news itself seems to be bare bones, a presenter and some vt, reporters on the scene, Ursula can still break stories but you wouldn't know it

I remember when TV3 tagged nearly all of their stories as Exclusive when they started broadcasting. Nearly every second story was give the term.

But "DSP staff aren't nice" is not news.
