Hi, my girlfriend and I are planning a trip to japan this October. We are hoping to go for 16-21 nights. We are having trouble deciding how to split the days on where to stay. Does anyone have any recommendations? Our initial thoughts on places to visit are Tokyo, Kyoto, maybe Osaka and Hiroshima then back to Tokyo for a few nights. How many days is too much in these places? Any other advice on japan is welcome. Thanks

I've been to Tokyo but I didn't really travel out of the city in the time I was there, so I don't know a lot about the rest of the country. Apparently though, the JR railpass that you get outside the country is a must-have, because it can save you a serious amount of money on travel within Japan.

In the Tokyo area I would recommend the following:

    - Nikko: nice town up in the mountains with loads of shrines
    - Kamakura: loads of shrines, and you can get this little local train called the Enoden, which brings you to Enoshima island and also to this huge statue of the Buddha (Daibutsu).
    - Harajuku: probably the fashion (if not style) capital of the world! Go there at the weekend when everybody dresses up to be seen, and all the cosplayers are out. It was my highlight of the place, and the first place I will go if I go back. Just an amazing parade of humanity trying to get noticed!
    - Shibuya: you will probably find yourself there at some point anyway. A great spot for just seeing all the masses of people crossing the road. Tokyo doesn't have a single centre, but Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ginza are probably the main focal points of the city
    - Ameyoko: this is an outdoor market by Ueno station, which I really enjoyed
    - Roppongi: hmmm, should I recommend Roppongi? This is where the expats go, and you might or mightn't want that. There are Irish and other foreign type bars there, including loads of dodgy people trying to get you into titty bars. Wouldn't be mad about it as it gets seedy and not the nice idea that most people have of Japan. The Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills has a great viewing platform though - a great place to watch the sun go down over the world's largest metropolis.

Outside Tokyo, Osaka is supposed to have great food, and might be less touristy (albeit a really big city). Kyoto is on my wish list, as is Hiroshima - supposed to be really different and really friendly. Check out Nara too - supposed to be a lovely city.
