I don't usually listen to the radio on a Saturday morning but I was driving and did have 2fm on. Hadn't heard Fanning for ages but by god does be still have it. Sounded fresh enthusiastic engaging. Not pre-scripted, no forced gags. He could be the answer to 2FMs breakfast commundrum

I concur. I've been listening to him on weekends and I do enjoy it. I also preferred the tubridy show when Dave was filling in for a week or 2. He should have a better presence on rte radio for sure some of the others are useless.

Dave filled in for Gerry Ryan for years and years and i think he should have taken over the show when Gerry died.

Still have it? Have what? Probably the most annoying presenter on radio. I thought 2FM was supposed to be a youthie station. Is he a youth? What exact training did he get to be a radio presenter? Do you think it is a sign of a professional broadcaster to talk so quickly? Why has he not ever tried to join the BBC do you think?

Yeah that would likely have worked. It's a pity they were too short sighted.

He's getting a gig on the BBC shortly AFAIK.

He was good when he had the drive time slot.

You could ask the same question of Chris and Ciara, youth? fresh? annoying?

Actually you might be right. I read somewhere he will be presenting some Irish music on BBC Radio 666666 something or other.

Sorry but I have never liked Fanning.
Tried a few times recently and still can't get into him, just something about him that annoys me, can't put my finger on it.

Dave Fanning hosted a TV show in the 90s called The Movie Show. His drive time show always covered film and TV (though he is not that knowledgeable about TV).

Chris and Ciara are 2FM's attempt at grabbing back the Yuff from regional radio stations, the plan

Head hunt the head of a regional station (I Radio) give him a nice wage and let him bring his hosts from his old station on to the national airwaves.

"Why has he not ever tried to join the BBC do you think?"
He had done stuff for the BBC, and is presenting for them shortly.

"....when all of a sudden he is an expert film and TV reviewer."
As already pointed our Dave has been reviewing films for ages, longer than you have been posting on Boards.

BTW, what's wrong with rattling on about Irish musicians and their songs. BBC seem to like our music and will be getting Dave to rattle on there soon.

Never knew about him being a film reviewer for ages I must admit. Don't know how much 'stuff' he has done for the BBC either. Did he ever apply for a permanent job with them do you know?

Dave Fanning (or any presenter) may not be right for the BBC and a presenter may not want to leave their home country.

I don't think Dave Fanning has ever done anything abroad, bar Planet Rock Profiles which was just sold internationally. Looks like he has done stuff for Sky Arts.

They wouldn't be able to understand his Gatling Gun-like delivery for starters.

This is his main problem. And us listeners too. How he ever passed the entrance exam for RTE radio presenter is beyond me. What low standards RTE have to let him away with his prattle for so long. When I hear him I switch over.

Do you ever see ads for RTE presenting jobs in the newspapers? I never do. Is it who you know? What do they look for? What qualifications must you have? I would have thought having a correct pace would be high up on the list. But apparently no.

Maybe I am getting old but when I hear presenters of a certain age (and Dave F is pushing 60 now) gabbing on and on about music that young teenagers are listening to, I just want to reach for my revolver...

I can't stand Dave "Look at me, I'm best mates with Bono" Fanning. I have to turn him off when he comes on, Larry Gogan too. Their voices are like nails on a blackboard to me.

I haven't listened to Dave Fanning in years but he did great work promoting Irish bands (and lesser known international bands) for years. I'm sure I wouldn't be into a lot of the music I'm into if it wasn't for his show.

I also won a telly/video combi (wow!) from a phone-in competition on his Movie Show on the television many years ago. (Actually, I got two because the distributors made a mistake, and I...eh...didn't get around to returning one.)

I understand why a lot of people wouldn't like his style of talking, but I reckon he's made a big contribution to broadcasting over the years. And regarding his age, John Peel was very highly regarded up to his death at the age of 65.

I heard him on the his first Sunday morning of the new schedule.
He started the show by sneering and guffawing at the opening liner, which was a call out to text , tweet etc. It seems it was too naff for a cool dude like him.

He then went into long, meandering Sunday newspaper 'reviews' with two Journos who have been boring us for decades with similar guff. One of them was Cait O Riordan.

After about seven minutes the station was changed and will never, ever change back to Dave Fanning on a Sunday morning.

In that show, in that context, in that format, he is a waste of hair dye.

Is that fault of the talent or the guy who put him there or the producer or all of the above?

I reckon that, in his head, Dave still thinks he's a rebellious teenager - the "too cool for school" type. He's almost 60 FFS. He should really start acting his age at this pont.

I wouldn't call about 7 minutes long and meandering for a newspaper review. But it is a long time to wait for somebody to change the station if something pisses you off.

Sky do a 30 minute review at 10:30pm every night and repeat it again at 11:30pm, 12:30am and 1:30am.

So says the apologist for RTE. I wouldn't be surprised if you were working for them, considering the way you invariably seem to defend anything and everything that comes out of Montrose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,118 ✭✭✭Expunge

I'm sure it was a lot longer than seven minutes. I stayed with it for seven minutes and could take no more.
Marian Finucane also dealing with our betters papers reading out of the papers at that time, as are other stations.

As for the Sky News and BBC News papers reviews, it's not really comparing like with like is it.
There are the visual aides, engaging presenter and a wide range of reviewers from different backgrounds, not the pool of 80's liggers that is so beloved of Fanning and producer.

Don't think there's one. Just that 7 minutes isn't long for a newspaper review.

BTW, I do agree with your Sky News point about visual aides. They've somehow managed to create a whole programme around newspaper reviewing.

I'm certainly no apologist for RTE. The point about my employment is not relevant.

I think I'm very fair and post based on that, not defending or criticising for the sake of it.

Nah, don't think so. If my posts are fair and reasonable it makes no difference where I work.

Some people work in a place and do more criticising than defending their employer, so the notion that if I'm not criticising then I must work in RTE, is void.

I suspect the mods will be along shortly.

I don't meet Dave Fanning at work, that should clear things up.

Rock the reviews Dave for as long as you'll get away with it!

You're only as old as your long drawn out anti RTE whinges.

Have to say, I get why this comparison was made, but also I reckon it’s an important one that belongs more in the Fanning naysayers camp rather than the Team Fannings to use.

Dave Fanning is most definitely not akin to John Peel despite hearing that comparison made many times over the years; John Peel from the 60s up until his death in 2004 continued to champion the underground music scene. He would discover and break new acts before any of his younger contemporises and remained as popular to the youthful demographic of BBC Radio 1 because his passion remained on the music, employing the same methods, ethos and enthusiasm as the when he began on radio. If Peel were alive today there is no doubt he would still be DJing festivals and supporting underground music culture.

Now, although it’s true that Dave Fanning played a similar role on Irish radio, breaking new acts and bringing underground Irish music to the forefront on the National Broadcaster during the late 70s into the mid-90s; and indeed there are a few posts here in support of the man as he helped shape your musical tastes growing up and introducing you to new music, the question you should ask yourself though is if he provides the same service to the demographic now? As while we might have grown up and older with him, the demographic for 2fm remains (supposedly) unchanged.

The painfully obvious truth is that this is no longer the case and that Dave Fanning has very little interest in music beyond a certain point, I even think he has been quoted on what little interest in music he has in various interviews and that his focus is to do shows focusing on a more magazine style current affairs format. In fairness to Dave I think most music heads reach a shut off point where their need to explore the current changing musical landscape ceases and they just don’t get the same buzz from the new and shiny they once did. DJs like Peel, Peterson or Dineen are a very rare breed for this reason.

That said though, I personally don’t see the benefit of promoting Fanning to the breakfast slot or would ever describe him as a ‘Fresh solution’ as it just feeds into the RTE traditional of moving the furniture rather taking a trip to Ikea and getting yourself a new set. Is Fanning still fresh? Depends on your definition of fresh, your view on what age group 2fm should be aimed at and how relevant the shows he could do fit in with that. Personally I would have little interest or enjoyment of 2014 Fanning, but this is just my opinion.
