Washing machine 'sticking' during cycle

    Hi lads,

As it says, my Whirlpool AWM 5104/3 AA 1000 Spin is sticking mid cycle.

Most often it'll stop during the main wash stage. If I turn it off and then on again, it'll often start up again. Same if I advance the programme dial a notch.

Started happening once or twice a wash. Now it's every few minutes.

A couple of times it stuck during the fast spin phase. In this instance, it didn't stop, merely span for ages until I advanced the dial.

Some programmes are better than others. Short wool wash worked ok, for example.

I've checked and cleaned the pump filter.

Any ideas what this could be?

Check the brushes on the motor, they may be worn down.
Problem also points to the timer/module/pcb may be banjaxed.
That is a fairly old machine isn't it.?

    POWER OFF BEFORE ANY CHECKS........

Sounds like it's got an old electromechanical programme controller that has failed.

Price the repair, but it might not be worth fixing. The control system is often pretty pricy and replaced as a full module.

It could be a failed heater or thermostat too. Some machines wont advance the timer until a temp is reached. That's a cheap repair.

Try running a cold cycle and see if it works.

You'd really need to call a service person out.

It's an old enough machine all right, probably close to ten years now.

It froze on the cold wash, but we're having better success with quick washes, though it tends to stick on repeated fast spin then drain, then repeat.

    Hi folks.

My washing was giving trouble during the week & this thread came up on a search.

It's a Whirlpool AWM 5104 (year 2003). Same trouble as OPs machine. Program sticking, machine not draining.

Yesterday I made an attack. Checked inlet pipe to pump, filter, outlet pipe & the operation of the pump itself. Cleaned it all put it back together.

Same thing again. Couldn't figure it out.

Today I attacked again. looked at all the components again, only this time I looked inside the pump outlet. Sure there was a 5 Cent coin jammed in the outlet. It somehow made it's way thru the filter & into the pump housing.

So I put the whole show together again & did a trial run.

    Success! \0/

Hope this helps someone else with the same trouble. 'tis the little things that catch you sometimes...
