    Hello,
Am considering getting a road bike, not sure yet, be mainly for fitness and not racing.
I have looked at a boardman road team carbon, to me seems good value, but new to this so not sure, it has shimano tiagra shifters and front derailleur and 105 back derailleur, is it worth spending more to get full 105?
Also whats the general opinion of boardman? is this a bike that would sell again secondhand? or any other makes you would recommend?

some people think boardman is perhaps below par, purley because its sold through halfords. ive a mate that has one and has had no real problems with it.
If i were you id price around and see what you can get for your budget.
I bought a trek 1.5 and upgraded the shifters from standard tiagra to 105, i love it.
carbon wont make you a better cyclist, after all a decent aluminium frame with good components is better than a cheap carbon bike.

I have a 9spd Tiagra bike and a 10spd 105 equipped bike. For the ordinary leisure/fitness cyclist there is no difference worth mentioning in terms of smoothness of shifting, the only difference is the shifter cables are hidden on 105 BUT with both cables running under the bar tape it makes the bars an irregular shape/lumpy at the top bend whereas with Tiagra the bars are neater/smoother and as the single brake cable runs under the bars and so you don't feel it when riding on the hoods.

If you've narrowed it down to two bikes then base your judgement on the ride quality and not the group set as either will be more than appropriate for your needs.

Thanks for you replies, the more i read up on bikes the more confused i get, so many options!
Lizzy, budget would be 1200 tops, maybe i would be better going for an aluminium framed bike so,or would you view the board man carbon as being a poor bike? when you mention an aluminium being better with good components than a cheap carbon
I intend to look in a few more shops and see what they have any ways before i commit to buy

Have you looked at buying a used bike? With that budget you'd get a really good bike or you could spend around half to get something similar to the Boardman.
I have a Boardman myself (got second hand off this site) and its grand. It has a Tiagra/105 mix, but the finishing details aren't as good as my other bike (same price range), a Cube.
The skewers and brake fitting parts on the Boardman are corroding and look cheap and the paint on the frame (aluminium) is awful and coming off in places.
My Cube has all shimano (sora) and hasn't a spot of rust on it, and its the same age and gets ridden more than the Boardman as an all year commuter

I've had a few different bikes now, mid-range aluminium and high end carbon. Naturally the high end carbon is much lighter, seriously responsive and amazing to ride, but that didn't necessarily translate to a higher average speed. A good fitting bike is infinitely more important.

As for 105 vs tiagra, I've ridden bikes with everything from tiagra to dura ace, and a bike with well set-up tiagra is nicer than poorly set-up dura ace. Sure, tiagra stuff FEELS a bit more plasticy and lower quality, but in terms of shift quality set-up is more important than the quality of the parts.

€1200 is a decent budget to play with, you should definitely be able to pick up a mid-range alu bike with mostly 105 for that. I just got a trek madone 2.1 with 105 shifters and mechs for £1000 on c2w, which is roughly €1200, and although it's not the lightest, it's probably one of the best fitting bikes I've owned. You could also look at the planet-x pro carbon with ultegra shifters and mechs.

One thing to note about buying a 2014 model equipped with the 10 speed 105 groupset (version 5700), is that this has been recently superceeded by the announcement of a new 11 speed 105 (version 5800). This brings the 105 group in line with the higher-end Shimano gear (ultegra & dura-ace).

The new groupset should start appearing on the 2015 models announced in the autumn, so the 2014 models equipped with the old 10spd 105 version will start being discounted from, I dunno, October timeframe?

Others with more experience of the economics of the bike market may have an opinion on how that change will play out.

I have the 2013 version of this bike and absolutely love it.
I cycle 180km+ a week, commuting and weekend spins.
I did change the saddle though as it didn't suit me, my only other
gripe is with the brakes which could be better in my opinion.
They are not 105 on mine but are on the 2014 version
    which should be an improvement.
    Happy hunting

Went to look at the cube bike, but sold out, had a look in another shop and ended up putting a deposit on a trek madone 2.3, a 2013 model, so was reduced in price,

to me it seems good value, all 105 components bar the cassette and chainset

That cassette ratio isn't available as a 105 (open to correction though).

(Seems unusual to have a 12/30 as a stock component).

    It's a tiagra cassette not 105

Nice looking bike you got there good luck with it

That's my point. All other components are 105 but not the cassette as there's no 105 12/30.

    What would standard be?

I have read too that the crank Shimano R565 is equivalent to an older 105 version?

Since I've started cycling I've had nearly ever shimano groupset (bar durace or di2) and between 105 and tiagra there's very little difference, probably weight . Imho when getting a bike groupset is one of the lesser important thing, wheels are top of the pile

12/27 would be the usual with a compact.
