Some amount of rubbish thrown around the place

I went for a stroll the other day in the middle of nowhere and spotted a dead calf wrapped in plastic, a rusty gearbox for a scooter (or possibly a quad) + the usual bottles and cans that you don't really take much notice of anymore, maybe an old fridge.

In Dublin as well there is more rubbish thrown along the street than there was before. The word on the street is that this is a sign that things are tigering up again and we should be grateful. People are finally throwing that old BMW 730Li in the skip or leaving it abandoned beside the road and buying new for the cheap tax. Or else all the lads who used to clean the street have been upgraded to nice cushy jobs with Irish Water(tm).

    Anyone else noticed?

It's the shoplifting kids and scumbags Sh1tbag, they're taking over. You can judge a society by the level of litter. We are currently tied with Mozambique and Upper Kirjekistan for fifth place in the "World Litter Stakes". Kurdistan pipped us for fourth by two Twix wrappers and a dumped tyre.

buying new for the cheap tax

Yep. Spending 20/30/40 thousand euro to 'save money' on tax.

True. When the people in power screwed every hard working person up the ass, why bother with 'civic responsibility'.

Jeez, in our house myself & wifey work hard & earn good money, but there's nothing left after paying out for essentials.

Now it's property tax, water tax coming in...etc..

Gone is the memory when your bins were taken away for free.

just had a great clean up in kerry..voluntary groups and one of the rubbish disposal firms collected it free.

it was stacked along the roads in pink bags and unbelievable the amount they had gathered. old furniture etc too

    just laziness and fecklessness

    People are animals,
    some are pigs.

On a busy suburban footpath that I was on earlier there were cans and wrappers thrown by people which collect under the bushes.

There are 2 bins just close by.

    Some people.

There is some filthy rotters out there but most cities in the world hire cleaners and the like for the streets. You would think with the amount of tax we pay they could scoop up more than once a day. I dont litter nor do I condone it but if we could get more than fat politicians out of our tax money that would be smashing.

Not advocating public dumping or anything.

    Don't do it myself either.

I think having a good government that would somehow run the country properly.

Do things right. not the half-arsed Irish way. That might improve morale.

Get things right at the top & the benefits trickle down all the way.

The empty plastic coke, fizzy drinks and cans are a total CURSE. There should be a deposit return of 20 cent on each And every bottle. The problem solved within hours. Many countries already have this very successful system in place for years.

Are you seriously trying to blame the government for people being lazy scumbags?

If you earn good money and have little left after essentials then I advise you to find a grown up to help you manage your finances or you need to redefine your definition of essentials.

Those taxes will come to a few hundred bucks a year at most. Most people in the country haven't had free bin collection for decades.

Ridiculous. The reason my brothers and I don't litter is because we were taught not to. I remember clearly crying as a kid because as I was made to pick up crap I'd dropped on the floor.

So I have no patience with the bullcrap about the economy and whatnot. It's getting old.

They used to find a secluded spot or a place where you could pull in and dump their bags.
Recently I've noticed it seems to be a case of just dump it on the side of the road any old place, sometimes it appears they didn't even bother to stop.
Every household should be made to have a rubbish collection service.

You should come to my town. Broken glass on the street and foot paths. You can't walk done the road without trying to avoid dog poo. It's everywhere here.

It's too depressing to go for a walk. The town is so run down and filthy and wtf is it with gravel everywhere I have no idea.

Took my boy to the local playground the other day and it was covered in empty bottles, wrappers, tissues and there is s bin right there. It was also filled with scumbag older kids making a nuisance of themselves running around and fighting with each other, not to mention the swearing and smoking. I had to leave shortly after I arrived.

It used to be such a nice quiet little town but in the last few years it's become something of a refuge camp camp for the scum of Dublin and Limerick. :(

Only a few 100 "bucks" sure you spend that in 5 minutes in Vegas and sure the government are entitled to it after all the good work they have done shipping our money back to Germany

Thats not really fair is it. Not every household that doesn't pay some private operator a few 100 quid a year goes around dumping stuff by teh side of the road

Its become a bigger issue since the privatisation of waste collection. I think once again this country has done it arse ways.

With the household tax , the government has pretty much prepared itself a pretty accurate list of all housing in the country. If needs be they should use this list, and crosscheck it with waste disposal customer lists (this would need legislative backup) and simply see which household isn't paying any waste disposal firms and ascertain why.

Would also like to see waste collection charges be included as part of rent, i.e landlords responsibility to ensure household has waste disposal, include local authority housing in this, local authority must ensure their households have waste collection.

What if someone has a legit reason for not paying for a collection service, as in recycle everything or bring it to the local dump? Do you leave them alone then?

In fairness most of the stuff I see strewn around isnt bags of household waste, just stuff that people feck out the car window and the odd calf.

Yes if you are one of the extreme minority that can recycle 99% of waste and legally dump the rest, then it would be pretty obvious quickly in any investigation, and you should be left alone. But I would be confident in saying a majority of people who don't pay any waste disposal are illegally dumping or burning.

Around the city unfortunately I see a lot of black bags of household rubbish dumped, I am quite confident that a waste collection system everyone must take part in then it would be reduced substantially immediately.

For glass bottles? Presumably the bottlers re-used them back then?

Of course, and there was a time, pre-tetra pak, when you couldn't buy a bottle of milk in the shop without handing in an empty.

Virtually all of them. I mean, if a farmer has no bin collection, nor does he have a receipt of hiring a skip or driving a van full of rubbish to the dump, i think that the dept. of ag. should really ask where all that silage wrap, plastic sacks, household rubbish etc. etc. is disappearing to
