They lost it for a reason so realistically, no.

Reading the two licence apps now, started with NWR, sorry Coast.

Entire application is "sure Ocean screwed up what we had going and if we're back it'll all change back to what it was". Some fairly outdated content already - apparently covering the town councils in the south of Donegal is critical, but they won't exist by the time the licence starts.

I'm not sure going all attack-dog is really the best option for an application.

Ocean's licence application has utterly off the wall costs in it, including a €330 mic down as costing €5300 and €110 headphones down at €330 - remind me to tender for their audio supply business!

why would they even be thinking about those costs, surely if they win they will use the same studios as currently? or is it the case they will be replacing some equipment and have to include such costs in the application?

I believe its a requirement in the application. Its the (apparent, but clearly occasionally off the wall) costs as new for the kit they still have as far as I can tell.

Haven't read the applications but if they are re-equipping they would have to cost it.

If they are not re-equipping they would still have to show all items on their asset register and associated depreciation costs. This is standard enough business practice.

IT and general office equipment is usually written off over 5 years. Larger items like transmission and OB units depreciate over 10 years.

Depreciation hits your bottom line which does affect your profit margin so has to be shown.

The mic and headphone costs are completely off the wall, either that's a typo or it might be multiples of items.

I'd be fairly certain the 110 quid headphones thing is an issue where they're put a quantity of 1 against the value of 3; the mic however doesn't have any sense to it. Loads of the other kit is well above its actual new cost (not even current value) too though.

With a 14.55% share by 'Federation of Western Churches', a priest on the Board of Directors (despite no relevance I can see) and promising to play both the Angelus and catholic masses, Coast FM (AKA North West Radio v1.5) aren't exactly trying to break new ground... rather, they're trying to pick up where they left off despite their audience literally dying off.

Add in a 45 minute religious programme on Sunday morning which "is a hotbed
of debate on wider issues within the church" and an hours live broadcast of a religious ceremony. Although they state they'll have a rota system to include "Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and other such denominations", I'm interested to see how they share this all out and who they use with the considerable clout the catholic church has at board level.

Midwest's sport coverage has always been good, as has the new service... but it still seems stuck in a cultural vacuum and gives no reason to move out of it. I'll be surprised if the BAI essentially admit they're wrong and award the licence to Coast FM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭Fran1985

Niall Delaney has just confirmed on twitter that Ocean FM keep the licence for another 10 years. Can't say I'm surprised.

(Can't post link as I don't have enough posts yet).

I think it's a good decision to re-award the licence to Ocean.

However, the application procedure is flawed, in that up to 40 points can be summarily awarded to the incumbent, just because they're the incumbent.

It's supposed to be a fair process, not favouring anyone, but that simply isn't the case.

The incumbent always has the advantage, which isn't fair on the other applicants.

in an ideal world the nonsense would be scrapped and the applications would be put to a vote of the people in the areas served by the licence, but as we live in the real world that isn't going to happen sadly

He gets no mention on the "meet the team" part of their website anyway.
