Starting a new job and JSA

    Hi all

I have been on back to education allowance and about to finish my degree. Which means my BTEA will be finished and I will be put on the Job Seekers Allowance.

I have couple of job offers and I will start working from mid June. This new job will be a salary based job and I will get paid on monthly basis.

Can someone tell me, what will happen when I will go and tell DSP about the job. When I will stop receiving payment and if I am entitled to any benefits.

I Have been in education from last 4 years as a mature student. I am married and have a child. My wife is also on JSA from last 1 and half month at a rate of 202. How this all will effect her payment. The job I am taking is an IT role and will pay 24k to 26k per annum.

I am not concerned with keeping the JSA. It is just we don't really have any thing saved up and if payment stopped immediately, I am afraid for the house rent and utilities.

    Can someone advice.

You can sign off online on the last day you are unemployed.https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/secure/CloseClaim.aspx

If you need help after that ask you local CWO for a loan to tide you over/or ask in work for a sub.

Since when did CWOs give out those type of loans?

The CWO can issue discretionary payments on a case by case bases when asked.

Is your wife in receipt of jobseeks allowance or benefit? If its benefit (stamps based and not means tested) because she would most likely be seen as a qualifed adult only if it was JSA.

If her payment is JSB its not means tested your income will not affect her payment. JSB only last for 9 months (260 contributions needed) or 6 months (if she has less than 260 contributions/stamps).

If your wife is in receipt of JSA then you will become the qualified adult when you finish BTEA and her personal rate will increase.

Your CWO has discretion in relation to some payments, ie. supplementary welfare allowance schemes. You can discuss this with a CWO in advance, but remember, to be eligible for JSA you must be "available and genuinely seeking work", so although you have a job you must still be seen to be looking for a job in the period between. Just be careful what you say.

Given that your wife is in receipt of a payment it is more likely you will be seen as a qualified adult in the period between your BTEA payment ending and you starting your job.

Dont forget if its JSA and ye are not already receiving it then apply for rent supplement ASAP. If your child is old enough then at the very start of June you can apply for Back to School Footwear and Clothing Allowance
Same goes fo medical card, even when you working as you can deduct you rent or mortgage payments, any childcare costs and travel to work costs, life insurance premium with regard to mortgage protection and fire and contents insurance.
Medical Card is net income minus the above expenses
