built this pc a good few years ago for playing games. can play everything at the moment at medium settings..

is anything upgradeable on this machine or is it pointless.. dont have cash for a new system atm but would like an fps improvement in the likes of world of tanks.

processor: Intel core 2 quad 6600 @2.4ghz.. i had it at 3.2 before but it would stay stable for few months then give trouble so i unclocked it.

    mainboard: Asus p5q

    ram: 8gb ddr2

graphics: ATI radeon HD 4870 512mb

    hdd: Samsung 500gb

think my psu is like 700 and im using a coolermaster case with rear fans, no top fan.

would a better ventilated case and overclocking to 3.2 do the trick.. think my mainboard might be the cause of the problems i was having when overclocked...

    cheers dudes.

CPU cooler is the key to oc, what are ya using?
You could smack on a better GPU, like the new shiny GTX 750Ti.

ill have to open the case up later and see what cooler i used.

so a better card could still work ok with my setup

Overclock the q6600 to 3ghz+ and pop in the best gpu your psu will take. If your currently using an 4870 you should be able to swap in an r7 270 no bother, and just push the core clock slider & power sliders as far as they can go in catalyst control center (or even further with a third party app).

q6600 is stupidly overclockable, particularly with good cooling. I've mine at 3Ghz using the stock cooler, no issues.

yeh it ran stable at 3.2 for about 6 months last eyar then started acting up so i unclocked it.

would there be any point to buying a second 4870 and running them in crossfire or is it too old a card to bother?

maybe i just need to replace the thermal paste on the heatsink of the cpu but it never ran too hot from monitoring it..

Like estilen said, a 750Ti would probably give the best solution. €123 when run through http://geizhals.de/

    @copeyhagen.

The resolution of your monitor is very important when it comes to picking the correct GPU. No point buying a nice shiny GPU that will run games at 1080p if you only have a monitor with a VGA connection on it that runs at 1600x900. So the MAX resolution is important.

World Of Tanks is very CPU dependent. To run it at max settings you need something duel core @ about 3GHz,so your CPU should be fine with a mild overclock. I would suggest the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO as it offers a great price/performance ratio and is readily available. You have to change the cooler if you want a stable overclock as the stock Intel offering is woeful. You will also need new thermal paste and TIM remover to complete the job.

You have more than enough RAM.

So if you could just post the res of your monitor I could recommend a decent GPU for you.

cpu cooler is a arctic cooling alpine 7.

when i opened case there is a tonne of dust inside.. ashamed when i seen it! havent cleaned it in 2-3 years...

could do with a few more fans i would imagine.

psu is only 550w too, have a 700w in my mams house though if i need more power

put new thermal paste on the cpu, 100% improvement on temps.

just picked up a r9 270 2gb gddr5 too so should help my fps in games.

gonna clock the cpu back to 3.0 or 3.2 tonight.. sorted
