hey, having problems with the wheel on my passat making clunking noises going over bumps, ive read online this retaining clip on the brake caliper might be something to do with it -

can someone tell me the purpose of this clip and how do i know if its faulty?

A knocking sound going over bumps to me would indicate a suspension problem and not a brake problem. What year Passat do you have? I had an 01 tdi and it one weakness was the front suspension arm bushings.

hey, i got a 02, just passed the nct, and i just got the drop links done , the noise only came into it when i done the brake pads, im wrecing my head trying to solve the issue, would this clip cause the problem if it was say bent in any way or not sitting in right?

if its missing only will cause a noise, need to get all balljoints and drop links checked, make sure all nuts are tight on balljoint as one in last week it was unscrewing, wheelnuts and cv tight.

only reason im thinking its break pad related is i didnt have the clunking noise before i done the pads, plus its passed its nct and had new anti roll drop links done

did you not know nct can feck up your car the way no mechanic can as some force is used in testing suspension, that photo if your car looks ok,other side ok?
if in doubt check everything if the pad was too small outer would move up and down but yours have lips stopping up/down movement.

Is the noise there all the time or just when braking over rough ground?

just seems to be when im going over rough ground like potholes etc, makes a clanking noise!

hey cheers ill give it a good look, the mechanic or the nct couldnt see anything wrong, just why im assuming its the brake pads, im wondering if the anti rattle clip wasnt sitting in right, the brake pacs could move, and going over any bumps would cause the clips/caliper to move around making the noise

just wondering, is the anti rattle clip in the center suppose to be pushing against the brake pads themselfs, or is it the clips ends you push in that do that job?

strange as usually a fair bit of force is needed to reseat them unless old one lost strength.glad your sorted with a cheap fix.
