    Hi,

I've wanted to change my name to my mothers maiden name for a while now.
My passport needs to be renewed so I'm reminded to look into it again.

Can I just apply for my passport with the new name or do I really really need to do the whole deed poll thing.

I don't really mind doing it but the process seems a bit confusing to do it DIY and I don't really want to have to hand over cash to a solicitor.

    Thanks

No you don't need to do it.

You change your name by usage, so you just start using whatever name you want.

I think you can have either parents name on your passport as long as it's on your birth cert.

Would there be an issue with a non parent name?

You'd need 2 years of proof for that I think.

it's not regulated. You can fill out a form and lodge a change of name by Deed poll in the courts but it has no effect in law whatsoever.

With regards to changing your name to that of a parent on the birth cert, does anyone know how to do that? My mother and father's name is on my birth cert but she and he aren't married so I took her name, but the Irish form which is somewhat different. I was told before that in order to change language I'd need either 2 years of usage or else a deed poll but since it's the same name and her name is the English form could I switch to that with no hassle? Is it possible to then have Irish on the passport under "observations"?
