The Worst Job You Ever Loved?

Used to work late nights in a petrol station in a dodgy part of Dublin. Pretty crap job: involved all the bad parts of retail plus cleaning the petrol station public toilet (I've seen things...), dealing with junkies, double shifts, bad sleeping patterns as a result and no breaks.

But sometimes I kinda miss the place. I could do whatever I wanted on the night shift, became friends with a few regulars, used to chill with one chick in particular in the shop and got LOADS of free coffee, car washes and such. The manager was sound and gave the staff free reign provided there was no issues.

    *takes of rose tinted glasses*

Whats the crappiest job you ever loved?

Collected trolleys in Sainsbury's, no-one watching over you. Just basically walked about the car park chatting to people, good in the summer, sh*tty in the winter

I liked working in a petrol station as well, always kept busy, you really worked for your money.

office cleaner for a large institutes corporate building, top notch building with lots of fandangly modern revolving parts and suitably high tec equipment, I worked on my own, the pay was great, I used go to work wearing headphones mostly and I had great abs from the 3 hour workout if gave me. No bosses or supervisors looking over my shoulder either, sweet job.

Another vote for working on a forecourt. And the tips from washing cars were brilliant. In theory it should have been a sh!te job, but it really wasn't.

Bringing in bales every summer when I was young. Did it for no pay on the family farm, did it for £60/week on a big farm ten miles away, but loved working in the outdoors, and was as strong as an ox by the time September rolled around.

    Jizz mopper.

Sure I ended up in some sticky situations from time to time but I found a certain release in that job that I haven't felt since. Every other job has been a bit of an anti-climax you could say.

Working in a bookshop. Free (good) coffee, book borrowing and virtually no knackery customers.

In reality, I should probably say retail. I worked on a Christmas contract in a big retail chain. (I still work for them, but in another branch). Sometimes, you'd deal with just some tough cranky customers, but my colleagues were generally nice and there was a good buzz. You did your job and got paid. They even gave us a Christmas buffet and a box of sweets to eat on the shopfloor on Christmas Eve.

But, if I was telling the truth and being honest, I'd say it was teaching English as a foreign language here in Dublin. I loved the idea of teaching language (having studied languages in college), meeting different people from all over the world and a very creative job at times when finding new material to teach the class. But in practice, the job was not great and I probably wasn't good at it, in the sense that I was putting an honest effort into teaching classes and students just wouldn't engage with my topics or give me a chance. Basically if they were not learning, it was always my fault and not because they didn't want to engage with me. Granted maybe I wasn't the best teacher, but I would have preferred that they told me honestly what they wanted to do in class when I asked them. I kinda learned quickly that teaching, while it can be rewarding in theory, is quite a thankless job in a lot of ways. At least in retail, you just do your hours and go. But in teaching, you can spend hours prepping and trying to come up with activities, but students won't gell to them as it's not what they expect of a teacher (in many cases, someone who just talks at them and makes them fluent ). Then, you have to deal with the School Directors, who won't care about your efforts and will let you go if he/she asks students for feedback and it's not good, regardless if you're just new to the profession.

After spending most of college watching Black Books, that job sounds highly exciting!

I worked in a petrol station washing cars, filling up cars and so on. Pay wasn't great, used to work until 11pm every Saturday night and it was tough going in the winter months but we had great fun there and some of the people who came in were complete nutcases.

My personal favorite was the night that one female customer threatened that she was going to get me sacked for shouting at her as she refueled her car whilst smoking a cigarette at the same time.

Customer service advisor on the phone. It's deemed one of those dreaded jobs and it's very controlled (going to the toilet is monitored etc) but I really enjoyed helping people out, investigating queries etc. You'd get the odd demon, but they're rare, and most of the time, they're wrong, so there's nothing to feel nervous about. :)
Some people's stupidity was mindblowing - that was the worst type of customer. Give me an irate customer before a complete idiot any day.

The money was too poor and the hours could be dreadful so after two years I needed to move on, but if better money and better hours, I'd be quite happy to stay doing it.
