02 Passat TDI Gearbox

Have my Passat for nearly 7 years, to say I am happy with the car is an understatement. With 200,000 miles on the clock the only major fail was the turbo.

Recently I have become concerned about the gear box. There is a slight whine but barely noticeable. Also when sometimes when I go to 2nd gear there is a resistance, I release pressure and then it slips in no problem.

At 200,000 miles and 12 years old I am concerned that the cost of replacing the gearbox will be higher than the value of car.

Has anyone had experience with gear box going.

I have also read mix reviews about changing the gear box oil.

Cant do any harm changing the oil.

Gearbox replacement is easy enough on one of these aswell if you are any way handy at all.

Depends what the car is worth to you and what the rest of the car is like weather or not its worth doing.

The whine sounds worrying but, I have a 00 Golf TDI (198,000ish) and last year I adjusted the gear linkage which made a nice change.

You can do it by inserting a thin shaft (nail) in to a special mount under the gear gaiter and then fiddle with the linkage in the engine bay. Takes into account any age related slackness.

Gearbox oil is well worth doing, but it is something I didnt DIY.

Definitely worth changing the oil. Use VW G060 726 A2 for best results. It should be less than a tenner a litre at a dealer and you'll need about 2.3 l for a refill.

There's a special tool for the drain plug but it's available in any good motor factors. Make sure you're able to open the fill plug before opening the drain plug.

With the high mileage I am beginning to see issues becoming more frequent, all small things but it all mounts up. Think the day is coming where I will need to change, tax is out end of September. Would ideally like to have the comfort of having a reliable car while searching and not under pressure to buy a car ASAP.

Will change the oil over weekend and see if that is much of an improvement.

Normally a 17mm hex bit for VW box plugs. If you can't find a good guide online send me a PM with your engine code and I'll get you the workshop guide. Worth doing to ensure it's at the correct level again if nothing else.

It's either got a 012 or 01E 'box depending on the engine fitted. Both use a 17 mm hex driver for the fill plug, and the drain plug is a security M16 XZN driver with a cutout in the middle: http://www.drapertoolbox.co.uk/draper-63476-12-square-drive-2196-67557.

A funnel with a long tube on the end might be useful for refilling it as access to the fill plug is tricky.

    All,

Hope I am in he right forum, but, while driving last week (and a couple of times for about a week before that) the cruise control kept disengaging on My Renault Megane and losing speed as we were driving. I didn't think it was a big deal as we don't really use the cruise control all that much. Anyway the car is under warranty for another 18 months or so so i thought i would ring the renault garage and ask them about it.

They told me that if there was a problem with the cruise control, it should be covered under the warranty so i should bring it in to them, so i did. They drove it just to see what i was talking about and after about ten seconds, he said to me that this isn't a problem with the cruise control, the clutch is gone and that is what is causing it to disengage, i need a new clutch.

So that is annoyingly expensive, he was going to charge me €1,400 for a new clutch but i got a better price from a friend who has a garage and where I brought the car and i dropped it into him this morning.

He rang me back ten minutes later and asked me if anyone had done any work to the car recently as there were two upper bolts missing from the gear box and the third bolt was only just hanging in there. I said that there was a gear box replaced by the renault garage under warranty last november and he said that it looked like they hadn't fixed the bolts back properly.

I talked to the renault fella who initially denied that they had done anything wrong but then looked for the number of the garage where I bough the car, so that he could ring them. I then rang my friend after renault had talked to him and he said that renault had told them to do whatever he was doing to it (i.e. replace clutch) and then i could drop the car back into renault and they would fix whatever was missing (i.e. missing bolts)

So, my question is how serious not putting bolts into a gearbox might be, could this have caused the damage to the clutch ( Renault apparently didn't secure a uv line or something like that which is leaking grease in the area as well)?

I would defo say that any loose bolts in gear box would have an effect on the clutch as it probably means the clutch had to work harder to get in gear etc.. (especially with leaky grease).

Any advice would be appreciated as I think Renault are to blame.

    Many thanks
