A temporary filling and general "what should I do" question

So I think I've done some damage to myself and upset a very deep filling in my back tooth. My tooth is really sore if I try to put any pressure on it and while I can feel my filling rocking around in it's hole it's not come fully loose but I'd say it will shortly. I'm not going to be able to get to a dentist tomorrow so I'll have to endure it until Tues at least.
Is it ok to put temporary filling in a tooth that's sore/maybe infected?
Is there any brand that's best as I tried one in the past and it was like a paste of flour and water and was washed away by the first drink I took hours after applying it.
Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thats nearly tempting... at least it wouldn't crumble into dry grains like the chemist filling seems to.
