Defence Forces Learner Drivers

Could someone please educate me on something here:

This afternoon, on my way back toward Kerry on the M8 their was a Defence Forces Personnel Vehicle on the Motorway. It had the L-plate on the back with a sign about 'Learner Driving in Progess' and after passing it, I noticed the L-plate on the front also.

I thought that L-drivers were prohibited from using the Motorway  No way would that much attention to drawn to a Learner Driver if one were not actually driving the vehicle, with their speed only on the 90kph marker too.

Is their a separate provision for them that someone can direct me to?

    Thanks,
    kerry4sam

Maybe the driver was fully licensed and was taking a shorter way back to the barracks?

Maybe the defense forces have different rules to the rest of us? Perhaps only the defense forces can police them & enforce them? It is not unusual to see army lads on the M7 with speed cameras. I presume they are checking that the defense forces vechicles going about their business near the Curragh aren't speeding, coz regular Garda speed cams can't give 'em tickets. Perhaps the L plate rules don't apply to them either.

He/She has to have a full licence for two years to apply for a driving course. They are only "learning" to drive the nissan/pajero. Also the defence forces have different speed limits then everyone else. (There lower)

Could it be a fully licenced driver on a driving course with the defence forces who hasn't yet qualified in a defence force vehicle to their standard?

Seems a bit stupid as they should be trained to drive fast to evade capture, explosions been fired upon etc etc.

I assume that training takes place off public roads...
