Query regarding salary

    Hi all,
    I'm currently through to the next stage of recruitment process of small firm and involves a presentation. The job is located in south Dublin, so I would have to relocate and as everyone knows rent is extremely dear there. I haven't been told what the salary will be, does salary and the package be released before one accepts a job offer (if they get that far). Also, this position is a permanent job, but its outsourced through a firm in the UK. Are there any disbenefits to this, I imagine a reduced salary will be one since the UK firm will be getting a commission?

    You will of course be told the salary, how could you accept a job and not know the pay?

    The salary should be negotiable to some degree, but at the end of the day it comes down to whether you are willing or able to work for what they are offering. If it just barely covers cost of living then why would you take it? If it leaves you with enough to cover basics and have a decent standard of living then...

    There are lots of salary surveys out there for you to compare. Also the outsourcing bit has no bearing - whatever commission they are paying the UK company is between themselves.

    I'm only graduating from uni this year, so if they based their over on my experience, it could be quite low.

    As this is job is quite specific, I have tried get rough comparisons, but none that are accurate. Thanks for the feedback anyways!

    Imo you should at least have an idea of the salary range before you interview - if the company can't pay you enough then why take up your time and theirs?

    If they haven't asked the question yet, I'd think about raising it with the recruiter (or whoever you're dealing with). If you want to avoid coming across as money-focused, just tell them you've been looking at apartments in Dublin and were curious about the salary, to see what you can afford. I don't think anyone would see that as unreasonable, and it also shows that you're thinking seriously about the move and potentially joining their company.

    They might be reluctant to give you a salary figure, but if you can give them a range you'd be happy with, they should be able to tell you if that's close to theirs or way off the mark.

    The question about outsourcing via a UK company; as Owen mentioned any fees will be paid by the company, completely separate to your salary.

    From my own experience you might find that if the UK company has just a small number of employees in Ireland, you might get fewer benefits than your UK counterparts. Also training etc will be held in the UK so you might miss out on that. But if there's a larger number of employees here neither of those things would apply - overall I wouldn't worry about it :)

    When you say this is outsourced to the UK company, do you just mean the recruitment process, or are you an employee of theirs that's on-site with the company in Dublin?

    If it's the former, then it doesn't normally affect the salary. A company won't expect to pay someone more or less, depending on whether they came in through a recruitment agency or not.

    Absolutely - it'll be part of the contract that you review before signing/accepting. If you're going through a recruitment agency, then don't be shy about asking them what the salary range is. Weirdly, despite it being one of the most important factors in a job, you're not supposed to bring it up in an interview, unless they do first. But it's perfectly fine to ask an agency.

    If they do bring it up during the interview, they might ask you what your salary expectations are, rather than tell you what they're looking to pay. Do you have a number in mind? Do you know what you'd ask for depending on the package (e.g. pension, healthcare, educational assistance etc)?
