Hi people I'm buyin a car in the coming months for travelling large distances once twice a week so I need something very fuel efficient, comfortable and RELIABLE. I have boiled down to two choices either the 320d BMW or the 130bhp 1.9 A4. Any help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks ps I wouldn't want to go below 2002 or above 2005.

Your talking about 9 to 12 year old diesel cars here so how reliable they are will depend on the individual car in question and how well each has been looked after by it's previous owners.

    Have you driven either?

whatever you do, get them "plugged into" by your mechanic, for milage errors.....this segment of the market is full of some well disguised and some not so well disguised clocked smokers.

Would definitely agree with this. Went to see a 05 bmw 120d last year in the midlands (5 hour round trip). 100k on the clock. Asked to see the previous NCT certs and service history. Service receipts were presented but they mentioned nothing on them about what mieage they were carried out. He presented me with an NCT cert from a few months previous. Mileage on cert was 161k!!!. For a moment I thought that it was Km which would related to 100k miles on the clock. Checked my own cert in the car and mine was in miles. Pissed off. Didn't say another word. Put the cert back in his hand and walked out of the yard. Knew as soon as I drove the car that there was more than 100k on it.

For reliability, a 1.9 tdi a4 would be a better option than the bmw Imo.

Yeah I've heard nothin but great things about the A4 130bhp engine. It's just hard to find one that isn an RS4 replica and looks like it's been revved out in ever gear by some 19yr old

There's over 150 on carzone alone, maybe 20 of them are boy racer types, I'd say the amount of 3 series of the same vintage with "modifications" would be similar. IMO, the RS4 thing is a lazy, boring, and plain wrong observation.
