Hi, Never lived in the country before and now I do. And I absolutely love it. My problem is I know nothing about farming. So, a few questions that will probably sound retarded.

    1. There is a field beside the house with about twenty cows with calves. Is this a 'suckler' herd?

    2. There appears to be one bull in with the cows. Is that likely? (I'm no vet!!)

    3. If a bull got really pissed off, presumably a little electric wire wouldn't even slow him down?

    4. Farm on the other side was sprayed last night with what looks like cement. It obviously isn't cement but it was dry and gray. Any ideas?

There will be more stupid questions.

2 cattle are one of them religions that allow you many wives (older bull would serve many cows everyday)(young bull would be a dope and commit to one and ware himself out then miss others)
    3 fence will stop most
4 lime most likely stops land getting heart burn

Ever here the story about the young bull and the old bull?

They spot a herd of cows in the distance and young bull says " we'll run over there and bull a few of those cows"

The old bull replies " no we'll walk over there and bull all the cows"

A bull seems to be the dread of a lot of people who don't really understand farming. And rightly so, they can be unpredictable and dangerous.
But never take a cow with her calf for granted either. Some of the suckler cows can be extremely protective of their calves, and every bit as dangerous as a bull.

Keep asking the questions. He who is afraid to question is ashamed of knowledge :-)

Only the other day I saw a video from a calving camera on Fb. Yer fella was crossing out over the gate and the cow started smashing his leg up against it. Bad do.

Or the one about the boy who was late for school?
Boy: Sorry miss, I had to take the bull to the cows.
Teacher: couldn't your father do that?
Boy: no miss, it has to be the bull.

A lad I know was dossing in school one day, of course his mother came in looking for him as a cow was calving at home and the father was away. They told the mother that her son wasn't in and she said he was. Sure then they knew what he was up ta and called him out on the intercom, he had to go up to the office with his tail between his legs and then go home and calf a cow, poor ****er!
