Cheapest Car Rental

It seems to be that car renting is much more expensive in Ireland, than in some other European countries I have lived in.

Can anyone recommend a really cheap service? I don't need a new car, any old wreck will do.

no, renting in ireland is insanely cheap. Seriously. I think my mrs paid 7euro a day or something when she was on maternity. Thats cheaper than the bus, only for city parking hitting you in the pocket depending on where youre going.

Or are you looking for a specific time, maybe mid summer, possibly bank holiday weekend even, and hope that the deals will be available then? Well, they arent.

For summer and christmas the rental companies make back the cash that they loose during off peak rentals.
But for the other 40odd weeks of the year theres no better place than Ireland to rent.

THanks for your reply, which company did she use? I have not found any company offering a price of 7 euro per day to be honest.

You can rent a car at the airport for less the €40/day. Much cheaper than taxis, and most of Europe.

Your best bet is to use one of the places that scan all the vendors: http://www.arguscarhire.com

But as stated above in high season it's expensive... (Ireland is a big tourist destination - even if we don't see it that way, that means most car hires are tourist rather than domestic and so the price is much more variable... Other places with lower tourist numbers (compared to population) have more stable car hire pricing.)

Once you're past the Easter weekend it seems 7 a day is about right ....

Personally I'd avoid Argus. I hired from them before. Had a major issue with the end hire company. Argus are only a middle-man. Argus were zero help, was even difficult to get contact details from Argus phone support. Since the hire was over, they wanted nothing to do with it.

It ended up with the credit card company sorting it all out. But it was a lot of hassle and could have been very expensive.

    Autoeurope.ie

I always use a broker, you just deal direct with the car hire company anyway.

I usually pay between 7 and 10 euros a day from Dublin Airport... waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy cheaper than any other European country I've been to.

Just make sure you don't use a US Website as this price doesn't include CDW.

I got stung recently for something like that, the lady assured me that "YOU MUST HAVE TICKED A BOX TO SAY YOU DIDNT WANT THE WAIVER" (which I was pretty certain I didnt do)so i had to pay an additional 8 or 9 euro per day or something over priced like that, which was painful.

Has anyone experience of using a 3rd party insurance company to cover the excess?? I see companies that offer to cover the excess. Sometimes the car company will freeze £1500 /2000 on your credit card to cover any damage, which touch wood I have survived without any trouble so far. The other option is to take additional coverage from the car rental company for 20/25 euro per day.
Has anyone used a 3rd party insurance hire excess before? Something like this? http://www.insurance4carhire.com/
What happens when you hire the car, do the hire companies except the cover or do you still have to freeze money on your c card?

    I've used insurance 4carhire before.
I think they still freeze the money but I4CH cover the cost of the excess if you have to claim.
CDW insurance is a huge scam worldwide and I4CH or similar works out great if you rent more than a week or so a year.

    Thanks for that.

Does anyone know of companies that DO NOT charge a surcharge at the airport? Budget travel have stung me for 28 euro surcharge at airport (both Dublin and Shannon) which they do not clearly outline (well clearly enough for a clown like me) until you have the booking almost confirmed.
Do all the rental companies apply this, is there any that dont?

Just an update on this, i used auto europe this weekend for a trip to Ireland. I picked up & returned car to Dublin Airport.
The deal i got was good value, renting through enterprise(there were multiple options and companies but that was the best deal.) It beat the quote on the actual enterprise site by about 5euro per day.

There was no issue or hassle with either Autoeurope or Enterprise, and no hidden extra costs, or I wasnt treated like a second class customer for having booked through an agency! I will be using Autoeurope again.

    Thanks for the recommenation keithclancy

German website billiger-mietwagen.de offer good prices and there is a tick box for full cover.
Generally cheaper than Argus for full cover.
I use them every couple of weeks and just this week booked, cancelled and booked another hire car with them.
Only problem with them is it is hard to figure out who you are ultimately renting from. I try to avoid Budget Car Hire because the cars are usually not well maintained or not what you want, i.e. Rattlebox of a Nissan Micra instead of a Polo.
