New Wheelset - Alu v Aero

Folks, would really appreciate some advice. I'm in the market for new wheels, I'm currently on Aksiums. I have started Interclub racing with a view to open racing possibly later this year.

I have been speaking with a number of club mates about upgrading my wheels and there are 2 distinct camps. One saying going with high quality Alu wheels, ksyrium SLS, fulcrum racing zeros etc, the other recommending something deep, Cosmic Carbones, Fulcrum Red Winds etc.

I would appreciate all opinions, there are so many arguments it's hard to articulate all in one post, weight v aero etc. I generally cycle on lumpy terrain, 90kg, mixed bag of races, TTs and sportiffs. I understand the aero wheels would be of advantage in a TT, would the likes of the Ksyrium SLS' offer much of an advantage to top end speed? Some broad questions I know. Budget is around the 700 mark.

Lightweight Fernweg, off you go. Clinchers too.

I've racing 3s and carbones. Both are great and have served me well. I'm particularly fond of the 3s. 50mms not good in wicklow on windy days.

Get a good set of DT Swiss rims (shallow or aero), Chris King/Shimano hubs and have your local bike shop build the wheels for you or even better do it yourself. Very enjoyable and a great learning process and not as difficult as you might think. Have a google for Roger Musson's 'Professional Guide to Wheelbuilding' for all the advice you need including how to make your own tools.

I could sell my car, add a couple of grand and get a spare set too.

The graphics wouldn't really do it for me.

Anyone have any experience of either of these Planet X wheels, the CT45 carbon clincher of the 52mm carbon clincher. For some reason the CT45 isn't available in Planet X Ireland and vice versa for the 52mm.

I would be grateful to hear anyone's experiences or opinions of either and/or which of the two options is better.
