For those of you who have travelled to both America and Australia which did you prefer and why? I am planning on taking a month out and going travelling to either the states or oz but cant decide. Any recommendations based on experience? cheers

Australia because I could easily get to New Zealand. Have you considered New Zealand? Fantastic place.

Yes I am considering going there for a short while too while Im over there! Its such a long way may aswell take everything in while Im there :)
I was in New York in Novemebr and loved it and would love to do more of America but then I think Australia/NZ would be completely different culture

What time of year are you thinking? Two completely different weather zones. Whichever is in spring/summer I would go with.

America every time, oz was like USA light. Also America is way more diverse with different areas being quite different - not to the extent of Europe but way more then Australia.

I spent 3 week in OZ last year and thought it was so much like America, especially the cities which I thought was a bit dissapointing. America light is a good way to put it. Still loads of great things to see and do but if you want to experience the real Australia you might need to get out of the cities.

America is a country that is completely underrated, its a lot more diverse and interesting than most give it credit for.

OP - June/July is autumn/winter time in the southern hemisphere so might not be the best time of year. The US will be in the height of summer.

Sorry I was a bit vague with that remark. I meant it from a backpacker perspective, the US is no longer considered the cool or 'must see' country anymore, its been overtaken by SEA, South America and OZ/NZ as the destination to spend a considerable amount of time exploring.

Not sure if the OP said they were going backpacking.

Depends really on what your looking for. In June/July i done the east coast of Oz two years ago and had good weather most of the way down the coast. Spectacular scenery and you will meet a lot of people travelling the same route. If you want to visit cities and stay in good accomadation id say America offers a lot more in that regard. The Australian cities were definitely a bit American

America without a doubt, ive travelled and worked both the states and oz, the americans love the irish and its like 20 separate countries culture wise, i found Australia a beautiful country but a lot of ignorant/racist people.

I think I am going to go with the USA. I would love to go to Aus but I think since its such a distance to go I would like to plan it better and have more money going.

I hope to go last week of May to USA. I have been to New York last November and fell in love and would like to go back again for a few days. Anyone else recommend what states to visit? I was also thinking visiting Washington but is it worth a look or overrated?

America. A lot more to see and do there. Australia is also much more expensive. I live in Sydney and went to America for a holiday and everything was cheaper. Car hire/food/accommodation and also a much better service industry.

Americans are much more friendlier too.
