So, say I have 23/30 going into the exam , do I need just another 17 /70 from the exam paper to pass or do I need to get over 40 in the actual exam to pass overall?

    TIA

Depends on the class. Some will need you to just pass overall, some will need to pass all components of the module

thanks for response, how would you find out? there was never any mention in any of our classes, would they have told us if it was a requirement.
I am a JF if that makes any difference.

maybe give your lecturers an email ? its up to them whether or not you need a pass overall or all parts, so they'd be your best bet

Do you have a course booklet? It usually gives the guidelines in that

From other Unis that I have been in you always need to pass the written exam with a 40% pass rate in order for the other marks to count. It is because it is a separate exam. So in your example you would need 28/70 in order for the 23/30 to count.

That's not always the case here, like in JS of my course you passed the year if your overall grade was above 45% so theoretically you could fail every written exam so long as you had a high first in your continuous assessment.

But you can't just go by other courses, each department can set their own guidelines.

You should be able to find a module outline on my.tcd.ie. Search for your module code and it may outline the grading system.

I think these rules are normally based on the school rather than the module/lecturer though?

I know with maths and stats the course was restructured to reduce failure rates with the use of online quzzies and marks for going to tutorials.

pretty sure you can fail the exam so long as you get 40% overall in that module, or 30%/35% if you pass by compensation. when you pass a module its including continuous assessment.

Depends on the module and the school it's run by.
