    Hey Guys,

Was greeted by a dead battery this morning as I had left the lights on all night as there is no warning buzzer when you get out of the car the the lights still on.

    99 VW Polo 6N1 1.0ltr

Where do I start with trying to fix this? Or if there is not one, where do I start in retro fitting one!

    Thanks,

    Brian.

Just in case.... make sure that the brake lights are not on when you switch off all the lights with the ignition switch OFF. If the brake light switch is defective the brake lights will stay on and flatten the battery in no time as they are pulling 21 Watts each. The side lights shouldn't really flatten a healthy battery overnight, I used to regularly leave mine on in my Beetle for a 12 hour night shift years ago with no ill effects.

If there is one it's hooked up to the switches inbetween the door hinges that operate your interior light?

Interesting, the interior light doesn't work either so I will have a look at it after work and see if I can spot anything.

The connections on the switch can get corroded or the wires disconnect from the switch altogether.

...sometimes the door gets bent away from the switch after closing it on the seat belt buckle too often, or the switch gets mangled.
Personally I prefer removing annoying noises from a vehicle not adding them.
You could add a bell/buzzer on a new/scrap switch from the driver door and T off the dipped light relay coil +ive to it (or side light switched circuit; hazard/dash bulbs etc.) if it's not already a stock circuit, or rob the switch from the passenger side...or get into the habit of looking behind you as you leave the vehicle.

Does the little red "door open" light on the dash work? If not, the micro switch in the door lock is busted. A lock from a breakers yard should solve it.

Pretty sure there should be a buzzer.

it's sitting on the back of the instrument cluster (i think).

One thing to check, open the driver door, and see if the roof light comes on, if not then the car isn't recognizing that the door is open, so won't know to put on the buzzer. This is a common issue with the mk 4 golf (door microswitch would get dirty, and contacts wouldn't work). not sure if it's similar on a Polo.

So the interior light doesn't work at all in any position.

Break lights do not stay on.

I don't see any "little red door open light on the dash."

This is the switch we are talking in the door yea? I have swapped it with the one from the passenger side and still no luck.

I noticed there is a side lights light on the dash that does not light up when side lights are on.

Is this just a blown fuse or something?

(10mm)SBF10- 7.5A- Interior Lighting, Glovebox Light, Vanity Mirror Light, Luggage Compartment Light

For the 6N2 they're all on the one fuse.Guessing system is the same on a 6n1. Not sure about the buzzer though. The bulb could be gone in your interior light maybe.

I'd always check all the fuses first with electrical problems.
The brake light switch is often found on the top of the brake pedal. Sometimes they get knocked out or lose from the pedal hitting the contact. I'd check that's secure then I'd look at the contacts to the brake lights and grounding.

Sometimes it's just rust/oxidation is the problem. Do no harm get a little stone grinder for a wee drill and rub all the contacts to shiny metal as you go.
