I have something like the above on my Giant Talon 29er.

I'm a complete noob here so I'm not sure if this can be changed or not, but on my left handlebar is the shifter for the front gears (3 speed) and on the right handle bar is the shifter for the rear gears (9 speed), however to shift up on the left shifter you use your index finger, and thumb to go down, but it's the opposite on the other shifter.

Is it supposed to be like that? Can I (or should I?) change it?

The reason I ask is it's kinda confusing having the reverse on either side of the handle bars. I find myself shifting the wrong way accidentally. I'm sure I'll get used to it just wondering if it's a config thing or something.

Its not the shifters its the derailleurs spring action. Naturally the rear derailleur sits on the high gear and the opposite for the front.

I see... I think. So is there anyway of changing it? Or should I just get used to it?

You would need to get used the action, you could look at twist shifts maybe

Right, there is a reason why they are set up the way they are (a good reason too).

the thumb lever winds the cable up and the finger lever lets a little cable out, think of it like a fishing reel.

The big ring on the front is your "hard" front gear, the big ring on the back is your "easy" rear gear.

It takes more effort to wind up the cable than it does to let the slack out, which is why the thumb shifter winds it up and the finger shifter lets it out.

    Does this make sense?

Basically, it's fine, it's meant to be like that and no you can't change it.
