Schengen visa and coming to Ireland

I have a friend coming from the States soon and they want to travel as long as possible in the EU. The problem is that they haven't the time now to apply for a longer-stay visa.

They were thinking of entering Ireland for a month or two and then flying to France. Since France is in the Schengen area and Ireland isn't, they hope that the three months will only start once they set foot in France. Is this the case? Or will their stay of three months be for the EU as a whole, and not just for the Schengen region?

Any advice or ideas on this would be much appreciated!

A Schengen visa allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen countries for a maximum stay of up to 90 days in a 6 month period. Travel time spent in Ireland will not count as part of the 90 days as Ireland is not a member of the Schengen travel area.

as far as I am aware, US citizens do not require a Schengen Visa to travel in Europe - but perhaps your friend is not from the USA.

Tourists entering Ireland are stamped by immigration at the point of entry at the airport. It is at the immigration officers discretion to indicate how long the tourist can stay. Its usually between 30 and 90 days.
