I am currently putting out N P K out on silage ground.Soil indexes are 1 to 2 in most fields. No slurry has been put out.How much K can I put out so as not to be creating problems with milk fever next Spring.

Silage needs 100 units of k

Would that be at any soil index.Do I apply more P and K after cutting silage to bring up index plus 3000 gals cattle slurry. How much N would you put out.

Index 4 they say no need to put that amount out.
    100 units N 16 p and 100k on lower index ground.
    Slurry has 6 N 5 P 30k units per 1000 gallons

Be carefull with those figures for slurry as thinner slurry will have much lower values.

    If you're not spreading slurry for the first cut I'd be goin with more p + k on index 1 & 2 , 30-35 p and 110-130 k .

If using slurry and fertiliser for silage can both be put out together, and which should go on first

Teagasc say slurry first and leave a week to 10 days then fertiliser. If it got a shower or two than a week would be fine. If you go too close you risk loosing some of the N from the fertiliser.

If soil index for K was 2 and silage ground got 2000 gallons per acre would straight CAN be ok or would ya still need a compound?

Look what greegrass said above, 100 units of K on lower index ground, 1000 gals of un-watered down slurry has roughly 30 units of K. I have only used slurry and urea on silage ground for the last 4 or 5 years, but I was starting at high indices. K is water soluble so after the winter we've had if I could afford a pallet of mop I'd buy it:o

Have a look here, a lot depends on your soil pH, if it is below 6 K availability drops off.

Any one got a price for 50%k? Got soil tests and K figures are below 30%. Was told to put a bag and a half of 50%k to the acre in October. Just wondering what that would set me back? I have no access to slurry.

Soil test came back at Index 1 for K. Would it be better go with a bag of MOP now or wait till Oct - Nov ?
