Our oil boiler is on its last legs, so we are going to replace it this summer.
A neighbour of ours is a plumber and asked had we considered gas.

Just looking for opinions on what ye would do in this situation.
Basically we have the choice of going for oil or gas?
It will cost 250e to gas 'into' the house.

    Thanks.

    Gas, gas, gas

Absolutely gas. Just make sure the system is properly powerflushed as an oil boiler can get away with sludge but a gas boiler will be destroyed with it.

If your switching I'd highly reccomend upgrading your heating controls and zoning if possible as this will make your gas system much more efficient due to the boilers modulating capability. As Shane said, a powerflush is an absolute must for gas boilers

I agreed gas all the and put in good controls
Gas boilers can modulate right down to a bare flame, oil can't

True but the Viessmann's Blueflame oil burner can modulate like gas & rocket burners are also Blueflame but only two stage. Price is the issue (€4,500 for the Viessmann).
Riello have been trying to modulate their burners through pump pressure (30 bar, eek!) but they can't seem to get the CO2 below 17%.
It won't be too long before either fully modulating oil boilers are readily available on the market.
SEDBUK are pushing manufacturers to change existing HE oil boilers to be categorised as Band B so manufacturers are racing to bring out a Band A & the only way to do this is modulation.

    +1 on Gas

The Viessmann blue flame burner AFAIK works on gas-oil and I would be careful to find out has this been tried and tested in Ireland, as the gas-oil on the continent is different that what we get here (a different spec I believe) as they even use it in vaporising pot-burners with out issue.

Yes many use ELO (Extra Light Oil). I'm not even sure if this mix is available in Ireland. The Rocket burner certainly uses this. I think the Viessmann can use standard Class D but I'm also not 100%. This was told to me by Viessmann's engineer in the UK a few years back.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wolf have a modular oil boiler
I put flue gas analyser into the flue
    Flue gas temp 36 oC
    Co2 12.5%
    Co 28 ppm
The only draw back need laptop to service it to change parameters

Never come across wolf, only on the net. How are they priced?
What I like about the Viessmann is that they have a wall mounted one. It looks just like a gas boiler but still in the €4,500 region.

    About €3500 I think
That wall mounted one build in tiger loop or lifter

I remember talking to Gary before about the Viessmann one. The life expectancy of the heat exchanger is between 5 & 8 years.

A lot of money to be replacing a very expensive part every once in a while.

Now we all know i love Viessmann.

Oil is still cheaper than gas per unit though...

    How so?
Natural gas is 6.6 cent per kwh
Kerosene is 7.9 cent per kwh
LPG is slightly more expensive than oil but that is recouped through matching the demand via modulating gas boiler.
