Got the petrol lawnmower out for the first time this year. Started up for ten seconds blew out a load of white smoke and then went dead. Wouldn't start again. Tried again and the same thing happened. This is a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower only bought last year. Any ideas?

The white smoke sounds like oil getting into the cylinder, if it just didn't start I would have suggested getting fresh petrol but the white smoke sounds more serious.

Thanks Dolan, how would oil get into the cylinder? Is this fixable?

Yes, but you'll need to get a mechanic to look at it.

I replaced the air filter and it started working perfectly for me :-)

That makes sense, the filter must have been completely blocked and the engine was sucking oil up through the piston rings to make the smoke.

Hi was the mower turned on its side at any stage for cleaning have a look at the air filter if oily then replace it also take a look at the plug if its if sooty give it a rub with a wire brush fresh petrol should see you off and running.
