Yes it's kind of old but is relevant to today guy has a point

And now recently we are told we need to pay per household not for just a TV. I just say no the programming is not worth it and their internet presence is laughable. Anyone actually seen the 24/7 RTE news its the same broadcast rerun.

Yes and you can thank Pat Rabbitte and the gob****e there before him for that. Let's not leave facts get in the way of a good old fashioned RTE bashing though.

Pat Kenny was obviously worth it ironically as Newstalk were willing to pay him a million quid a year.
Wages are only a tiny fraction of
RTE's budget but some of them are massively overpaid.

I fail to see your point, are you saying rte isn't worth the licence fee or just tv in general ?

Poor programming and too many imported shows or just imitations of ones from the Uk The amount of money they gets vs quality of the shows. The new house licence seems to be just another tax tbh. And the wages of some of them is beyond shocking all because apparently they will move to the bbc even though none of them have ever been offered a job there or are not even known by the bbc.

the TV license isn't for programming, it's for possessing a device that could, even if repair were needed , receive broadcast TV signals even if only those from the obsolete and retired PAL system which is no longer used

the TV license isn't for programming,
I would say it is, well a very basic description of what it mainly goes towards
What is the TV Licence for?

In Ireland, public service broadcasting is part-funded from revenue collected from the public by way of the TV Licence Fee.
    http://www.rte.ie/about/en/how-rte-is-run/2012/0221/291618-the-license-fee/#question1
Who gets money from the TV Licence Fee?

RTÉ is not the recipient of all Licence Fee money. Approximately 7% of licence revenue goes to the BCI Broadcasting Fund. Revenue from this fund can be applied for by independent producers / broadcasters for specific projects of a public service nature. In addition, An Post is paid for providing collection and enforcement services.
it's for possessing a device that could, even if repair were needed , receive broadcast TV signals even if only those from the obsolete and retired PAL system which is no longer used
That is simply the (stupid) legal way they have come up with to determine if you should pay or not.

You've stated the condition you have to be under in order to be legally charged for it. You haven't said what use the money is put to as opposed to programming.

    It's an indirect tax.
