Roman Catholic Parish Registers

I just read John Grenham's piece on the RC parish registers - they seem to be in a mess! Would you even give points for trying? How could so much be just missing? Why does the RCC keep the records so private and the COI don't? But now I know the answer to one question anyway - why are there so many brick walls around?

Some dioceses are digitising their own records for their own purposes, as we found out with that unexpected release of a block of records on to Ancestry a few weeks ago - there seems to be a lot more done that aren't released that way as they've been done for their own use. Unfortunately, we already know that the RC church in general doesn't seem to respect the authority of the state very much, as goes ensuring everything is done...

Absolutely hopeless. I've tried to find the baptismal records of Donagh MacDonagh, baptised in November or December 1912, his godfather Joseph Plunkett, his parents living between Palmerston Road and Baggot Street, and it's a mess. There's no centralisation of records; records from some churches have allegedly been sent to other churches, whose (volunteer) archivists say they have no knowledge of this, etc, etc. I've had to give up the search.
The archivists were interested and helpful, but none found the baptism record.
